PS5’s High Price Is Impacting Monster Hunter Wilds Sales, Capcom Exec Says

Capcom`s president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, has indicated that the substantial cost associated with the PlayStation 5 console is currently putting a strain on the sales performance of their new title, Monster Hunter Wilds. While the game impressively sold over 10 million units in its first month—an unprecedented success for Capcom—Tsujimoto noted that the high price of the PS5, considered the game`s primary platform, presented an “unexpectedly large” obstacle in achieving sales targets. These observations were shared during an interview with Nikkei Gaming.

Tsujimoto`s comments were largely made within the context of the Japanese market, where the total investment for a PS5, including essential accessories and subscription services, can accumulate to approximately 100,000 yen (roughly $670 USD). He emphasized that this price point is not easily accessible for younger audiences, a sentiment he believes holds true across international markets as well.

Drawing a comparison, the executive highlighted the more favorable reception of the Nintendo Switch 2, which launched with a more accessible price tag of 49,980 yen (around $335 USD). This, he suggested, “reaffirmed the high level of cost-consciousness among ordinary consumers.” Despite its strong initial launch, sales for Monster Hunter Wilds saw a significant decrease, with only 477,000 copies sold between April 1 and June 30. While the PS5`s cost is a contributing factor, the game has also faced performance issues, predominantly affecting PC players.

Nevertheless, Monster Hunter Wilds is far from a commercial failure. As of August 2, it stood as the best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S. Capcom remains dedicated to addressing player feedback regarding Wilds, actively working on performance improvements and outlining plans for forthcoming content expansions.
