Released in America in 1998, the original Pokémon Red and Blue games marked the franchise`s debut. Decades later, a dedicated Pokémon enthusiast made an astonishing discovery: an unopened copy of Pokémon Blue, forgotten in their closet, which could now be valued at thousands of dollars.
The Reddit user “Sausagenpeppers” recently posted an image of this pristine Pokémon Blue cartridge, notably still bearing its original K-B Toys price tag.
While an unopened game is remarkable on its own, a subsequent photo of the box`s reverse side revealed an even rarer detail: a significant misprint. This particular copy of Pokémon Blue incorrectly features the descriptive text from Pokémon Red on its packaging.
Such production errors are exceptionally prized by Pokémon collectors, making this game potentially worth a substantial sum if “Sausagenpeppers” opts to sell it. The franchise`s most ardent supporters have demonstrated a readiness to invest heavily, even in unofficial collectibles. For instance, a Charizard-shaped Cheeto, dubbed “Cheetozard,” famously sold for $72,000 earlier this year. The high value of Pokémon items has also attracted less savory elements; last May, a man in the UK was apprehended with over $300,000 in stolen Pokémon cards, and there have been suggestions that certain Pokémon cards are being exploited for money laundering by Japanese organized crime.
The core Pokémon franchise continues to thrive, with its popularity showing no indication of waning. A new Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion is anticipated in November, and the eagerly awaited title, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is scheduled for release on Switch and Switch 2 on October 16th. Meanwhile, Pokémon Go has introduced its “Tales of Transformation” season, and Scopely has outlined the game`s various events for September.
