The *Perfect Dark* reboot, which was shelved by Microsoft in July due to widespread layoffs, reportedly nearly secured a new opportunity with publisher Take-Two. However, discussions for its revival have reportedly collapsed.
Sources indicate that Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind *Tomb Raider* and co-developer of the *Perfect Dark* reboot alongside the now-closed Xbox studio The Initiative, was poised to continue its work. Embracer Group, Crystal Dynamics` parent company, had been seeking a new publisher for the game since its cancellation two months prior, with Take-Two emerging as a potential buyer from Microsoft.
The proposed agreement for Take-Two to finance and publish *Perfect Dark* reportedly failed, primarily because the involved parties couldn`t agree on the long-term intellectual property rights, which Microsoft still holds. Consequently, Crystal Dynamics reportedly implemented an unspecified number of layoffs last week following the breakdown of these negotiations.
The *Perfect Dark* reboot was initially unveiled in 2020, intended to revitalize the classic sci-fi shooter series under Microsoft`s newly formed `AAAA` studio, The Initiative. By 2021, Crystal Dynamics joined the project as a co-developer. After a prolonged period without updates, a gameplay trailer debuted in 2024 at an Xbox showcase, showcasing the game as a first-person shooter incorporating immersive simulation elements.
Interestingly, prior to the gameplay trailer`s release, reports surfaced suggesting that the reboot was facing significant development challenges and had not yet coalesced, even with Crystal Dynamics` involvement.
Microsoft`s extensive layoffs in July led to an approximate 4% reduction in its workforce, impacting around 9,000 employees. This included staff from The Initiative, which was subsequently closed. Other titles canceled during this period included an unannounced MMORPG from ZeniMax Online, creators of *The Elder Scrolls Online*, and Rare`s long-anticipated *Everwild*.
