Octopath Traveler 0 Won’t Offer Switch to Switch 2 Upgrades

Square Enix has confirmed that players who purchase Octopath Traveler 0 on the original Nintendo Switch will not be able to upgrade their copy to the upcoming Switch 2 version. The publisher clarified on Bluesky that no upgrade path, whether free or paid, will be available, meaning players will need to purchase the Switch 2 version separately if they wish to play on the newer console.

This news, while disappointing, is not entirely surprising given Square Enix`s recent track record. The company faced criticism earlier this year for similar policies regarding the physical versions of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. This stance appears inconsistent, especially when contrasted with other Square Enix titles, such as the upcoming Final Fantasy Tactics remake, which will offer a free upgrade for the Switch 2. Many other developers also provide either free or paid upgrade options for their games across console generations, making Square Enix`s position on Octopath Traveler 0 particularly perplexing.

Further adding to player frustration, the Switch 2 version of Octopath Traveler 0 will reportedly be sold as a “Game-Key card.” Unlike traditional Switch cartridges that contain the full game data, these cards merely provide a download code. This shift is a significant point of contention for game preservationists and collectors who prefer fully intact physical copies. Consequently, players are left to choose between a technically less capable version of the game on the original Switch (which at least comes on a cartridge) or a more powerful Switch 2 version that is essentially a digital-only purchase. Initial reactions on Square Enix`s Bluesky post indicate that fans are dissatisfied with both options.

Octopath Traveler 0 is slated for release on December 4, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
