The Nintendo Switch 2 is dramatically outselling its predecessor in the United States during comparable launch periods. Fresh data from the research firm Circana, released on August 27, confirms this strong performance.
Since its launch in early June, the Switch 2 has already surpassed 2 million units sold in the US, achieving a sales rate 75% faster than the original Switch did when it debuted in 2017.
This impressive launch from the Switch 2 significantly boosted overall US gaming hardware sales in July, which saw a 21% increase, rising from $317 million in July 2024 to $384 million in July 2025. Notably, the Switch 2 was the only major console platform to report growth in the US during July 2025. In contrast, PlayStation 5 sales dropped by 47%, Xbox Series X|S sales decreased by 69%, and original Switch spending declined by 52%.
The Switch 2 secured its position as the top-selling console in the US for July 2025 and remains the leading system year-to-date. The PS5 held the second spot for both July and the year so far.
Globally, the Switch 2 has sold over 6 million units in its first seven weeks, exceeding Nintendo`s internal projections. The company aims to ship a total of 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the close of its fiscal year in March 2026.
Industry analyst Piscatella highlighted that such robust initial sales for the Switch 2 were expected due to high pent-up demand and the tendency of early technology adopters to be less price-sensitive. However, the Switch 2`s higher price tag compared to the original model could present a challenge as Nintendo attempts to appeal to a broader mass-market audience during the crucial holiday shopping season.
Further announcements regarding the Switch 2 and its upcoming game titles are anticipated soon, with reports suggesting a Nintendo Direct presentation in mid-September.
Interestingly, the Switch 2 stands as the only major modern console platform that has not experienced a price increase in 2025, although a potential price hike in 2026 remains a possibility.
