Nintendo Switch 2 Development Kits Remain Elusive for Many Studios

Obtaining Nintendo Switch 2 development kits remains an exceptionally challenging task, even three months after the console`s launch. Reports indicate that game developers, from major publishers to independent studios, are still struggling significantly to acquire these crucial tools.

The situation was extensively discussed on Digital Foundry`s weekly podcast, as highlighted by Insider Gaming. John Linneman, a senior staff writer for Digital Foundry, noted, “Nintendo seems to be almost discouraging Switch 2 development to some degree.” He further elaborated that many developers he`s spoken with were advised to simply release their games on the original Switch, relying on its backward compatibility features. Linneman added, “There’s a lot of developers that are unable to get Switch 2 dev kits. We talked to a lot of devs at Gamescom this year and so many of them said the same things.”

This scarcity of development kits has been a recurring theme surrounding the Switch 2 since before its official release. Back in April, reports emerged detailing the difficulties faced by smaller developers. By July, similar concerns were echoed by some AAA studios, suggesting the problem extends across the industry spectrum. This ongoing issue could be a primary reason behind the noticeable absence of numerous major third-party game announcements or releases for the new system.

Oliver Mackenzie, another contributor to Digital Foundry, provided further context. He mentioned a “campfire game” (referring to “Chillin by the Fire,” which launched recently) that successfully obtained kits, while “some big developers on the other hand, who developed like AAA stuff, aren’t necessarily in the pipeline there for kits.” This disparity highlights Nintendo`s potentially selective distribution strategy for the development hardware.

Paradoxically, despite the challenges faced by developers, the Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved remarkable commercial success. Since its launch on June 5, the console has broken home console sales records, with Nintendo announcing earlier this month that over 6 million units have already been sold globally. Looking ahead, there are rumors circulating about a potential Nintendo Direct event scheduled for mid-September, which might offer more clarity on Nintendo`s plans for developer support and future game announcements.
