Nintendo has recently launched a new survey to gather user opinions on the evolving landscape of physical versus digital game ownership. While the questionnaire includes some general inquiries, its primary focus is clearly on understanding consumer preferences when purchasing games for the upcoming Switch 2 console.
The survey delves into various specific aspects of this topic, prompting users to identify factors that influence their decision to opt for a digital game over a physical one. Respondents are able to select multiple answers, such as the perceived “stronger sense of ownership” associated with physical games or simply the enjoyment derived from “collecting physical games.”

A significant point of contention in the gaming community has been the introduction of “Game-Key Cards” for the Switch 2, which have largely become the standard for physical releases. These cards essentially function as authentication keys, requiring users to download the complete game onto their Switch 2 system. Furthermore, the physical card must remain inserted in the console for the game to be playable. A notable positive aspect is that these cartridges are not linked to a specific console, allowing for potential resale.
However, this system has drawn considerable criticism. Users frequently highlight that the longevity of game ownership becomes entirely dependent on Nintendo`s continued server support. This concern is not unfounded, especially given that Nintendo previously ceased allowing users to download Wii U or 3DS games from their respective digital storefronts. It is worth noting that a limited number of Switch 2 titles are still confirmed to provide the full game directly loaded onto their cartridges.
In response to Nintendo`s adoption of Game-Key Cards, Limited Run Games has announced that the vast majority of its upcoming releases will be “true” physical editions, meaning the complete game will be included on the cartridge. However, they did indicate that a few exceptions to this commitment might occur.
Some known Switch 2 titles that contain the full game on their physical game cards include:
- Nintendo Direct (4.2.2025)
- Mario Kart World
- Donkey Kong Bananza
- Zelda BOTW Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
- Zelda TOTK Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
- SMPJ Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
- Kirby at FL Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
