Before its official launch in early June, the Nintendo Switch 2 console`s release date was a frequent topic of speculation and rumors. Despite the eagerness of third-party developers and players, a recent report indicates that Nintendo intentionally postponed the console`s debut on several occasions.
Bloomberg reports suggest that Nintendo`s decision to not rush the Switch 2 to market stemmed from its design teams` requests for additional time to refine and “perfect” the initial batch of games. This commitment to game quality took precedence over other pressures, including the long-standing anticipation from both third-party publishers and the dedicated fanbase.
Another report from earlier this summer highlighted the scarcity of Switch 2 development kits among third-party companies, even months post-launch. This limited availability is thought to be a contributing factor to the lack of official announcements for several third-party Switch 2 titles. Furthermore, Nintendo`s own launch games for the console have significantly outperformed third-party offerings in sales, exceeding initial expectations.
Last month, Nintendo issued a statement acknowledging and regretting the inconvenience caused by the Switch 2`s limited availability. The company confirmed impressive sales figures, with over 6 million units sold by the first week of August, including a reported 2 million consoles distributed solely within North America.
Currently, the Switch 2 stands as the only major contemporary console unaffected by tariff-related price increases. However, this situation may change as early as 2026.
