Nintendo of America’s Wild Idea for Pikachu: The “Huge Breasts” Proposal

An old interview has brought to light a surprising detail about the early days of Pokémon`s localization efforts. It reveals that Nintendo of America (NoA) once put forward a proposal to give Pikachu “huge breasts” and to make other Pokémon characters resemble the style seen in the “Cats” musical. This fascinating insight comes from an interview with Tsunekazu Ishihara, who currently serves as the President and CEO of The Pokémon Company, an interview believed to date back to the launch period of Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Ishihara recounted that when the original Pokémon designs were first presented to Nintendo of America for Western adaptation, NoA staff found them “too cute.” In response, they unveiled their own alternative character concepts. Ishihara described these designs as being so “traumatic” that he vowed never to show them to anyone. He specifically recalled that their version of Pikachu was transformed into “a kind of tabby cat with huge breasts,” and noted that the overall aesthetic of the proposed Pokémon characters bore a resemblance to those from the “Cats musical.”

When pressed for further details during the interview, Ishihara confirmed that the designs were indeed similar to how women might creatively dress up as Pikachu at anime conventions. While he found the cultural divergence “interesting” to observe, he unequivocally stated that he had no intention of competing in the international market with such a style for Pokémon.

Fortunately, Pokémon was ultimately released overseas with very few alterations from its original Japanese version, subsequently blossoming into the colossal multimedia phenomenon it remains today. It is quite reasonable to surmise that this global triumph might not have materialized if the Pokémon characters had been anthropomorphized animals with exaggerated physical features, a creative direction perhaps more typically associated with franchises like Digimon.

In other recent Pokémon developments, Pokémon TCG Pocket has publicly addressed two instances of plagiarized artwork found within its new “Wisdom of the Sea and Sky” expansion. The company has launched an investigation to ensure no similar issues exist elsewhere in the game. Furthermore, fans can look forward to the next major game in the series, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which is scheduled for release on October 16.
