New Stephen King Box Sets Unveiled: A Look at Vintage Editions and Adaptations

While Stephen King consistently publishes new works and his extensive back catalog is frequently reissued, the release of new box sets of his novels is a less common occurrence. Currently, only a handful of King box sets are available in the U.S. However, that list is expanding this week with the debut of the Classic King Box Set 1. This collection features three novels in a stylish slipcase, adorned with vintage-style covers.

Classic King Box Set 1: A Trio of Early 80s Horrors

The Classic King Box Set 1 brings together the 2024 trade paperback editions of three Stephen King novels from the early 1980s: Pet Sematary, Christine, and Cujo. Each book boasts an appealing vintage cover design with classic fonts. This display case arguably stands out among currently available Stephen King box sets.

Featured Novels in Box Set 1:

  • Cujo (1981): This unsettling horror novel, published in 1981, centers on a rabid Saint Bernard. It`s a gripping and quick read, notably famous for being a book King admits he doesn`t recall writing due to his struggles with substance abuse, a fact he revealed in his acclaimed 2000 memoir, On Writing.
  • Pet Sematary (1983): One of King`s most well-known works, this novel perfectly embodies his classic style. Set in Maine, it revolves around a pet cemetery built on ancient burial grounds. Legend has it, anything buried there returns from the dead. Protagonist Louis Creed learns this the hard way when his family cat, Church, is hit by a vehicle. Church returns, but not as the friendly pet they knew. Louis`s subsequent choices only escalate the horror.
  • Christine (1983): Also published in 1983, Christine is a supernatural horror novel about a possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury. While its premise might seem a bit whimsical, the story features an interesting cast of characters. It`s a fun read and, from a historical perspective, a “classic” work, though it is often considered the weakest of the three novels in this particular set.

Anticipating `Classic King` Box Set 2

Given the naming convention “Classic King Box Set 1,” it`s reasonable to expect more collections in this series. Though not officially announced by Scribner, it`s speculated that Classic King Box Set 2 will include Misery, The Dead Zone, and Firestarter.

This prediction is based on the fact that Classic King editions of these three novels are set to release soon, mirroring the staggered release pattern of the books in the first box set.

Potential Novels for Box Set 2:

  • Misery (1987): While widely recognized for its 1990 film adaptation starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, the original 1987 novel remains one of King`s masterpieces. This psychological horror tale follows novelist Paul Sheldon, held captive by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, and forced to resurrect a fictional character. The new cover features Annie`s silhouette with her infamous axe.
  • The Dead Zone (1979): King`s first foray into science fiction, this 1979 novel tells the story of Johnny Smith, who awakens from a coma with clairvoyant abilities, seeing future events through his visions. It was adapted into a film starring Christopher Walken in 1983 and a TV series in the 2000s.
  • Firestarter (1980): Following The Dead Zone, King published Firestarter, a blend of science fiction and horror, about a young girl with pyrokinetic abilities.

All six of the novels featured in the current and anticipated “Classic King” editions have been adapted into at least one feature film or television series. Several, like Pet Sematary and The Dead Zone, have even seen multiple adaptations or sequels that expand upon the original stories.

Notable adaptations include:

  • Christine
  • Cujo
  • The Dead Zone (Film & TV Series)
  • Firestarter (1984 & 2022)
  • Misery
  • Pet Sematary (1989, 2019, & Bloodlines)

As noted, Stephen King box sets are not abundant, especially those sold by major retailers. While King often incorporates cross-references between his books, most of his stories are standalone novels, which might contribute to the fewer number of multi-book series sets.

However, one notable “classic King” themed box set from 2019 by Anchor includes the author`s first three published books: Carrie, `Salem`s Lot, and The Shining. This slipcased collection features some of his most iconic works.

Other available Stephen King box sets include:

  • Stephen King: Three Classic Novels Box Set (Paperback editions of Carrie, The Shining, and `Salem`s Lot)
  • Stephen King 5-Book Box Set (UK paperback editions of The Shining, Doctor Sleep, `Salem`s Lot, Cujo, and Firestarter)
  • The Dark Tower 8-Book Box Set (Paperback & UK Editions)
  • Bill Hodges Trilogy Box Set (Hardcover)
  • Short Fiction: The Mist, Apt Pupil, The Body, The Sun Dog (Paperback)
  • The Gwendy Trilogy Box Set Edition (Paperback)
