Retro gaming enthusiasts will soon face an intriguing decision, as ModRetro has disclosed the pricing for its contemporary homage to the Nintendo 64 console. Set at $200, this device, first hinted at last year, presents a compelling and more affordable alternative to the $250 Analogue 3D.
The M64, much like the Analogue 3D, is an FPGA-based console meticulously designed to authentically replicate the Nintendo 64`s hardware experience. This approach mirrors ModRetro`s previous success with the ModRetro Chromatic, a thoughtfully engineered Game Boy successor. The Chromatic seamlessly blends modern conveniences with a genuine handheld gaming feel, capable of playing all original Game Boy cartridges. Its premium construction also ensures a superior user experience.
Further specifics about the M64 remain under wraps. However, a trailer shared by ModRetro`s founder, Palmer Luckey, subtly hinted at a release date with a “do not open until Christmas” message. A key question is whether the M64 will incorporate advanced features found in the Chromatic, such as integrated video streaming and multiplayer capabilities.
FPGA consoles are highly favored by serious retro gamers because they enable classic games to be played in high definition via HDMI on modern displays. The Analogue 3D pushes this further with 4K output and various filters that emulate the look of a traditional CRT television. It will be fascinating to discover if the M64 can deliver a comparable visual experience.
For those more inclined towards Nintendo`s handheld era, the ModRetro Chromatic is currently available for purchase, with new stock and colors recently introduced.
