ModRetro has announced the relaunch of its modernized Game Boy handheld, the Chromatic. After quickly selling out following its initial release last year, ModRetro has confirmed that new stock is now available. The console returns not only in seven new color variations but is also accompanied by the introduction of new games and accessories. Potential buyers can choose from two different models: a $200 version featuring scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and a $300 version equipped with exceptionally durable Sapphire Glass.
The game library for the Chromatic is also expanding with five new titles, offering a range from story-focused adventures to updated nostalgic releases. Among the new additions are Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped, a reissued fast-paced platformer based on the classic cartoon; Wicked Plague, an old-school style metroidvania; and Self-Simulated, which presents over 100 levels of challenging precision platforming. The new lineup is completed by First Contact Protocol, an adventure-puzzle game with branching narrative choices and cinematic sequences, and Gravitorque, a physics-based puzzle-platformer.

Each Chromatic unit includes Tetris bundled in, and ModRetro has committed to ongoing support and updates. Future updates will include native streaming capability, allowing gameplay to be streamed directly to Discord, Mac, and PC without requiring additional hardware. Several new accessories are also available for purchase:
- ModRetro Rechargeable Power Core ($29.99): A snap-in battery providing up to 16 hours of additional gameplay time.
- ModRetro Link Cable ($14.99): Enables local head-to-head multiplayer matches between two Chromatic handhelds.
- ModRetro Mod Kit ($14.99): Offers high-quality, swappable parts for personalizing the Chromatic`s appearance.
- ModRetro Koss Porta Pro ($49.99): A headset designed with a retro aesthetic specifically for the Chromatic.
While the market includes various modern devices aiming to recreate the Game Boy experience, many relying on emulation, the Chromatic is widely regarded as one of the best options available. The $200 handheld successfully captures the look and feel of a classic Game Boy. Thanks to its construction using high-quality components, it is also a remarkably well-built device overall, fully capable of running original Game Boy cartridges without issue.
In a review, Steven Petite described the ModRetro Chromatic as “a truly superb recreation of the Game Boy Color.” He added, “If you want a near-exact replica of your childhood Game Boy with a backlit screen, this is the handheld for you.” Petite concluded that at $199, the Chromatic offers “ridiculously premium build” and is a “bargain for a very specific type of retro gamer.”
