Mojang and Microsoft officially announced Minecraft Dungeons 2 at Minecraft Live 2026, giving fans their first glimpse into the sequel of the popular block-pixel dungeon crawler. The announcement was accompanied by a thrilling debut trailer that hinted at new adventures and escalating dangers within the beloved Minecraft universe.
The highly anticipated sequel is slated for release on a wide range of platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Players can look forward to exploring a host of new locations, encountering fresh challenges, and discovering exciting new loot as they delve deeper into uncharted dungeons.
The announcement trailer opened with a serene scene, depicting peaceful villagers and picturesque landscapes, accompanied by a narrator’s ominous words: “In a land once plagued by great evil, brave heroes took up arms and triumphed against the terror. With peace restored, all was well. Until it wasn’t…” This tranquility quickly shattered, giving way to scenes of destruction, fire, and a cracked stone altar, before the camera plunged rapidly into the dark depths of a new dungeon. The sequence culminated in the striking title reveal for Minecraft Dungeons 2, setting a dark and intriguing tone for the upcoming game.
Official statements accompanying the reveal described Minecraft Dungeons 2 as “an all-new action-RPG adventure where you’ll take on high-stakes encounters, thrilling challenges, and explore never-before-seen locations in the Minecraft universe.” The developers teased a brewing “disorder” and a “new danger growing in power, ready to descend upon the land and unleash mayhem.” Players, alongside their allies, will once again be tasked with prevailing against these evil forces to save a world in crisis.
The original Minecraft Dungeons, which launched on May 26, 2020, garnered a respectable 70 on Metacritic. Critics praised its charming visuals, cohesive music, and engaging gameplay, though some noted its relatively short story mode. The game’s success led to an arcade edition a year later and a nomination for Best Family Game at The Game Awards 2020. Development for the first installment officially concluded on September 28, 2023, after it had amassed an impressive player base of 25 million across all platforms.
The reveal of Minecraft Dungeons 2 continues Mojang’s expansion of the Minecraft brand, arriving shortly after their plans to develop a Minecraft theme park world at the UK’s Chessington World of Adventures were also announced.
