MindsEye’s Rocky Start Leads IO Interactive to Re-evaluate Publishing Strategy

IO Interactive, the acclaimed studio behind the Hitman series, ventured into the realm of game publishing with its IOI Partners initiative. Their inaugural title, MindsEye, developed by Leslie Benzies` Build a Rocket Boy (founded by a former Rockstar talent), faced significant challenges upon its release. The game was widely criticized for its technical performance and various other issues. In response, IO`s CEO, Hakan Abrak, has addressed the troubled launch and is now openly discussing the future of the company`s third-party publishing endeavors.

Speaking to IGN, Abrak explained that IO`s initial discussions with Build a Rocket Boy focused on finding ways to provide support, driven by their conviction in the nascent studio`s innovative concepts. IO`s primary role was to assist Build a Rocket Boy, a brand-new developer with no prior game releases before MindsEye, in distributing their game.

Regardless of the underlying causes, MindsEye encountered substantial problems, a fact Abrak candidly acknowledged. “It was undoubtedly a difficult situation,” he remarked. “The reception was harsh, falling short of both their expectations and ours at IOI Partners.”

Abrak further stated that Build a Rocket Boy is diligently striving to rectify the existing issues and rebuild player trust. He expressed his continued belief in the team`s substantial potential, despite the rocky start.

MindsEye recently received its fourth significant update this week, a substantial patch weighing in at up to 15GB. This update introduces bug fixes and aims to deliver notable performance enhancements. A fifth major patch is also anticipated in the near future.

However, the question of whether IO will continue to publish games through its IOI Partners program remains unanswered. Abrak refrained from making a definitive statement, though he did confirm IO`s unwavering commitment to publishing its own titles, including the eagerly awaited James Bond game, 007 First Light. Regarding future collaborations with external studios, Abrak concluded, “That remains uncertain.”

The upcoming 007 First Light was prominently featured in a recent PlayStation State of Play broadcast. During this event, IO unveiled the game`s official release date, showcased fresh gameplay footage, and introduced a premium $300 collector`s edition that notably includes a replica Golden Gun.
