Earlier this year, Microsoft had announced plans to sell some of its new games, including The Outer Worlds 2, for $80. However, these plans have now changed.
Obsidian has confirmed that the standard edition of The Outer Worlds 2 will be priced at $70. A Microsoft spokesperson informed IGN that none of their games will be sold for $80 this holiday season. Although, apart from The Outer Worlds 2, no other Microsoft game had been announced with an $80 price point (some had speculated Black Ops 7 would also cost $80), in any case, Microsoft will not charge such an amount for any title this year.
“We are focused on providing players with incredible worlds to explore, and our full-priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, will be priced at $69.99, consistent with current market conditions,” stated the spokesperson.
As of the time of writing, the Xbox.com page for The Outer Worlds 2 still displays an $80 price for the standard edition and $100 for the premium edition.
Customers who pre-ordered The Outer Worlds 2 for $80 can receive a refund or reimbursement from the store where they made the purchase.
When Microsoft initially announced plans for $80 games, the company justified this decision by “carefully considering market conditions and the rising costs of development.”
Now that The Outer Worlds 2 will not be sold for $80, Nintendo`s Mario Kart World remains the only major new game from a prominent publisher to be priced at $80 this year.
