Meta and Arm Partner on Innovative AI Data Center Processors

Meta and Arm are joining forces to develop Arm AGI CPUs, cutting-edge processors designed for demanding AI data center environments, featuring up to 136 cores and high energy efficiency.

Meta and Arm have initiated a strategic collaboration focused on developing a new generation of processors specifically engineered for artificial intelligence data centers. This ambitious project centers around the ‘Arm AGI CPU’ line, a series of chips tailored to manage extremely intensive workloads, such as the training and inference of large-scale AI models.

The chosen name, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), is deliberate. It reflects the technology sector’s aspiration to achieve intelligent systems capable of rivaling human cognitive abilities, highlighting the advanced nature and long-term vision behind these processors.

Technical Specifications of the New Meta and Arm Processors

From a technical standpoint, the specifications of these processors are remarkably impressive, even by current data center standards. Each CPU is designed to incorporate up to 136 Arm Neoverse V3 cores, delivering high per-core performance. They boast a memory bandwidth of up to 6 GB/s per core and achieve latencies below 100 nanoseconds.

These capabilities are crucial for ensuring the smooth and rapid processing of vast amounts of data, a fundamental requirement for advanced AI applications. Scalability is another key aspect of their design. The chips operate within a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of approximately 300 watts and are engineered to assign a dedicated core to each thread, which guarantees consistent performance even under prolonged heavy loads. This architecture effectively mitigates common issues such as throttling or idle times, ensuring maximal computational efficiency.

Energy efficiency stands out as one of the primary strengths of the Arm AGI CPUs. Furthermore, these processors support high-density configurations: up to 8,160 cores per rack in air-cooled systems and an astounding over 45,000 cores per rack with liquid cooling solutions. The company already operates enormous data centers to support its vast array of services and plans to integrate these new processors with its proprietary hardware.
