Originally released in 2003, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” introduced audiences to the thrilling world of oceanic naval battles. This epic film, starring Russell Crowe, was a significant success, celebrated for its realistic portrayal of Napoleonic Wars-era sea combat and compelling performances. Last month, the film finally made its debut on 4K Blu-ray in the U.S. However, strong demand quickly led to Amazon selling out of pre-order stock, leaving many fans disappointed. For those still hoping to acquire it, Amazon has now restocked the Limited Edition Steelbook of “Master and Commander” and is once again accepting orders.
Although Amazon currently lists the Steelbook Edition as `temporarily out of stock`, customers can still place an order. Amazon will fulfill these orders promptly as soon as its inventory is replenished.
This Steelbook Edition is presently the only 4K Blu-ray version of the film available in the U.S. While a region-free standard edition, complete with a slipcover, was released in Europe, it is typically sold by third-party vendors in the U.S. at a considerably higher price than the $40 Steelbook Edition.
The “Master and Commander” Limited Edition Steelbook boasts a striking cover design, featuring Russell Crowe`s character, Captain Jack Aubrey, alongside his ship, the HMS Surprise. The back cover incorporates a compass motif, complemented by a subtle cartographic influence in the maritime background. Inside, the artwork depicts Aubrey gazing out at the vast ocean.
This edition features a native 4K remaster (2160p), derived from the original camera negative, and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos for an enhanced viewing experience. The two-disc set includes both 4K UHD and 1080p Blu-ray versions of “Master and Commander”, along with a voucher for claiming the digital edition via Movies Anywhere.
Bonus features include deleted scenes, a trivia track for history enthusiasts, and a dynamic pop-up map that traces Captain Aubrey`s ship movements throughout the film.
It`s worth noting that the original DVD release of “Master and Commander” offered a wider array of special features that were not carried over to subsequent standard Blu-ray releases. This two-disc DVD edition has been out of print for many years and can be expensive to find today. Nevertheless, for those deeply interested in the film`s production and historical context, it remains a valuable companion piece, containing several in-depth documentaries.

“Master and Commander” has maintained its critical acclaim and popularity in the two decades since its release. The film is loosely based on Patrick O`Brian`s epic historical fiction series, narrating the story of Captain Aubrey`s relentless pursuit of the formidable French privateer Acheron, a warship threatening Britain`s naval supremacy. Caught between his duty and his friendship with the ship`s surgeon, Dr. Stephen Maturin (played by Paul Bettany), Aubrey embarks on a perilous chase after the Acheron.
Similar to other historical films from the early 2000s, “Master and Commander” achieved an exceptional level of authenticity. Naval warfare movies were uncommon at the time, and this production stood out for its period-accurate costumes, language, and immersive realism. Filming utilized an actual ship, the HMS Rose, alongside a meticulously built full-scale replica housed in a massive tank at Baja Studios in Mexico.
Other Ridley Scott Films in 4K
Speaking of Russell Crowe, fans might also be interested in other films starring the actor or directed by Ridley Scott. The Gladiator 2-Movie Steelbook Collection, an Amazon exclusive, was released in May. Russell Crowe famously starred in the original “Gladiator” (2000), while Paul Mescal took on the lead role in the eagerly anticipated 2024 sequel. Both films were directed by Ridley Scott.

Another notable Ridley Scott film that recently received a 4K restoration is “Kingdom of Heaven”. This Director`s Cut significantly expands upon the theatrical release with extensive additional content, enriching several scenes. While the Steelbook Edition of “Kingdom of Heaven”`s Director`s Cut has proven difficult to find, a region-free 4K standard edition is available.
Set against the backdrop of the Crusades, “Kingdom of Heaven” follows Balian (Orlando Bloom) as he joins his father, Baron Godfrey (Liam Neeson), on a journey to Jerusalem, aiming to reclaim the city from the forces of the Ayyubid Sultan Saladin.
