During a recent Nintendo Direct presentation exclusively dedicated to Kirby Air Riders, Masahiro Sakurai, the acclaimed creator behind the Super Smash Bros. series, offered a rare glimpse into the game`s development process. He openly shared an initial concern: that his latest endeavor, Kirby Air Riders, might bear an excessive resemblance to Nintendo`s iconic racing franchise, Mario Kart.
Sakurai articulated this apprehension right at the start of the presentation, addressing both Nintendo corporate president Shinya Takahashi and the then-president of HAL Laboratory, Satoshi Mitsuhara. In a candid moment during the broadcast, Sakurai himself acknowledged the parallel, stating, “Okay, so it is basically Mario Kart.”
He recounted having raised this very point when he first received the request to develop the game. “I even mentioned this when I received the request to make the game,” Sakurai explained. “I asked them if they still wanted to do it, but as fans of the original know, the appeal of the game is actually not the races!” This statement suggests that while the game involves racing, its core appeal lies in distinctive elements that set it apart from typical racing titles.
The 45-minute deep dive into Kirby Air Riders provided comprehensive details about the upcoming racer. It showcased the diverse cast of characters and the various vehicles players will be able to pilot. The presentation also revealed Skyah, a unique floating island that serves as the game`s expansive setting. Additionally, several game modes were highlighted, including an impressive City Trial mode designed to accommodate up to 16 players for dynamic multiplayer experiences.
Kirby Air Riders is set to launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 console on November 20.
