Nearly two years ago, Nintendo declared that its popular mobile title, Mario Kart Tour, would no longer receive fresh content. However, this policy has been unexpectedly reversed. The app is now set to host a special in-game event next week, celebrating the recent launch of Mario Kart World on the new Switch 2 console.
The official social media account for Mario Kart Tour announced this exciting new campaign, which will feature iconic characters Mario and Luigi donning special mechanic outfits. In addition, four brand-new karts are slated to arrive in the app once the event goes live on July 23. This limited-time content is scheduled to run for two weeks, concluding on August 6.
This special Mario Kart World celebration will be incorporated into the existing “Sunshine Tour,” a recurring event that originally debuted in 2023 and reappeared last summer. In September 2023, Nintendo had confirmed its shift away from new content updates for Mario Kart Tour, opting instead to recycle previous tours like the Sunshine Tour. Despite this, the game had already achieved significant milestones by 2021, with an analytics company reporting a remarkable 200 million downloads and generating $200 million in revenue.
Last month marked the highly anticipated release of Mario Kart World alongside the new Switch 2 console. Reports indicate a remarkably high attachment rate, with an estimated 79% of Switch 2 purchasers also picking up the new racing game. This impressive adoption figure was undoubtedly bolstered by Nintendo`s strategic offering of a Switch 2 bundle that included Mario Kart World, making it an irresistible package for many new console owners.
