The recent Battlefield 6 beta set a new record, becoming the largest in the franchise`s history with an estimated participation of over 20 million players, according to research firm Oppenheimer. Interestingly, Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed that a “substantial number” of these participants likely experienced the game using systems that met only the minimum recommended hardware specifications.
Christian Buhl, Battlefield 6`s technical director, corroborated this finding during an interview with Eurogamer. Buhl underscored that EA and DICE deliberately engineered the game to ensure that players with lower-end hardware would still enjoy a gameplay experience comparable to those running the title on high-end machines.
“Supporting minimum specifications is undeniably one of our most critical priorities… it holds immense importance from both a commercial and business standpoint,” Buhl explained. “Our objective is to make the game accessible to the widest possible audience. We conducted extensive analysis and rigorous testing across a broad spectrum of hardware, covering configurations both above and below our official minimum and recommended specifications. This comprehensive approach allowed us to identify achievable performance targets and what was necessary from a business perspective to engage a large PC player base, a factor that proved absolutely essential.”
In the same interview, Buhl addressed player feedback concerning the game`s unpopular Secure Boot requirement, clarifying its indispensable role in the ongoing battle against cheaters. “The truth is, I wish we weren`t compelled to implement measures like Secure Boot,” Buhl admitted. “It regrettably prevents some players from accessing the game, as their PCs may not be compatible. This is genuinely unfortunate. I would prefer that everyone could play the game with minimal obstacles and without such stringent requirements. However, these tools are, regrettably, some of the most potent in our arsenal for preventing cheating.”
EA has since published the official PC specifications for Battlefield 6 and announced forthcoming changes based on the valuable player feedback collected during the beta period. Battlefield 6 is scheduled to launch on October 10 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
