Amazon MGM Studios has officially given the green light to a TV series adaptation of the popular video game franchise, Life is Strange. The show will go directly to series, with Charlie Covell, known for her work on “The End of the F***ing World” and “Kaos,” helming the project as creator and showrunner.
Production is a collaborative effort involving Square Enix, the owner of the game rights, along with Story Kitchen (producers of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films) and Margot Robbie`s production company, LuckyChap.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Covell stated, “It`s a tremendous honor to adapt Life Is Strange for Amazon MGM Studios. I`m a huge fan of the game and incredibly excited to collaborate with the outstanding teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap.”
The series will center on Max and Chloe, the beloved protagonists from the original game. A core element of the narrative is Max`s extraordinary ability to manipulate time, a power that often leads to unforeseen and challenging consequences.
Covell eagerly anticipates sharing Max and Chloe`s journey with both loyal fans and newcomers to the story.
While a “Life is Strange” television adaptation has been discussed for close to ten years, this marks its first official greenlight. There was speculation in 2021 about singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes potentially overseeing the music, though his current involvement remains unconfirmed.
This announcement follows a flurry of activity in video game adaptations this week, including news about a “Call of Duty” film from Paramount, Amazon casting Sophie Turner as Lara Croft for its “Tomb Raider” series, Netflix`s cancellation of “The Legend of Lara Croft,” and updates on the “Street Fighter” movie`s release date and cast.
Life is Strange will join a growing roster of video game adaptations at Amazon, which already includes the “Tomb Raider” series, a highly anticipated “God of War” series, a second season of “Fallout,” and upcoming shows based on “Mass Effect” and “Wolfenstein.”
The original Life is Strange game, developed by French studio Dontnod, debuted in 2015. The critically acclaimed series has since expanded with several sequels, most recently Life is Strange: Double Exposure from Deck Nine in 2024.
