After years in development, the highly anticipated Life is Strange television series has officially received a series order from Amazon MGM Studios. However, the announcement has been met with a critical remark from one of the original game`s writers, who stated on social media, “The only people not involved are the creators.”
IGN reported that Christian Divine, a writer for the first two Life is Strange titles, made this pointed comment, though he has not elaborated further.
Observers quickly noted that Amazon MGM Studios` announcement conspicuously omitted any mention of Dontnod Entertainment, the original creators of Life is Strange, or its initial writing team. This pattern dates back to the show`s initial announcement in 2016, where Dontnod was also uncredited.
Despite the apparent exclusion, Luc Baghadoust from Dontnod shared a more positive sentiment on social media, describing the adaptation of Life is Strange into a TV series as an “incredible honor.”
It`s worth noting that Dontnod`s direct involvement with the Life is Strange game series ceased years ago, with developer Deck Nine assuming control. Square Enix maintains ownership of the franchise. The most recent game installment, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, was released in 2024.
The production of the Life is Strange TV series is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by Story Kitchen (known for their work on Sonic the Hedgehog), Margot Robbie`s production company LuckyChap, and Square Enix.
Charlie Covell, previously acclaimed for adapting The End of the F***king World and Kaos, is serving as the show`s creator and showrunner.
Life is Strange joins an expanding roster of video game adaptations at Amazon, which includes the Tomb Raider series, a long-gestating God of War series, and the recently renewed second season of Fallout. Additionally, Amazon is developing TV shows based on Mass Effect and Wolfenstein.
As the series is still in its nascent stages, details regarding casting or a potential release date remain undisclosed.
