Liam Hemsworth Reveals How He Handled Backlash Over Geralt Recasting in The Witcher Season 4

In late 2022, the entertainment world learned of Henry Cavill`s departure from Netflix`s adaptation of “The Witcher.” Liam Hemsworth was then announced as his successor, set to portray Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming fourth and fifth seasons. As Season 4`s premiere approaches, Hemsworth has candidly shared his awareness of the significant public backlash surrounding his casting, a reaction that prompted him to largely disconnect from the internet.

“There was quite a bit of noise and I had to put that aside,” Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly. “It started to become a distraction. I dealt with that sort of thing in the past a lot and, you know, at the end of the day, I love making movies and I love telling stories and acting. I just don`t want any of that to affect my way of telling the story that I`m trying to tell. I jumped off social media and the internet most of last year.”

Hemsworth also offered a glimpse into Geralt`s initial state in Season 4, explaining that the storyline picks up relatively soon after the intense confrontation with Vilgeforz that concluded Season 3. Geralt will be physically wounded and mentally distressed.

“The beginning of Season 4 is pretty close after the battle with Vilgeforz,” Hemsworth noted. “He`s not in a good place at that point, physically. He`s severely injured. Mentally, he`s dealing with things that he`s not used to, which is self-doubt and this frustration. Now all of a sudden, you`re seeing the very human side to this person, but what you`re also seeing is the determination to fix it.”

A significant part of this season`s plot will involve Geralt forming a new “hansa” or team, dedicated to locating Ciri (portrayed by Freya Allan) and bringing her back home. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that veteran actor Laurence Fishburne will join the ensemble as Regis, a unique vampire who has forsworn drinking blood for decades and becomes an essential member of Geralt`s new company. Fishburne elaborated on the compelling dynamic between his character and Geralt.

“One is a monster killer and one is a monster,” Fishburne explained. “Under normal circumstances, they would be enemies, but in the story that they`re trying to tell, because Regis has sworn off blood for the last 50 years, he`s not a threat. Geralt actually takes him at his word about that and allows him to join this merry band of misfits that we call the hansa. Also, there was the idea that because Regis is 400 and some odd years old, he`s got a lot of life experience and accrued a lot of wisdom. He`s able to share that with Geralt as he goes through this odyssey of trying to find Ciri.”

Fans can anticipate the premiere of “The Witcher” Season 4 on October 30, exclusively on Netflix. The streaming service has already confirmed that the series will conclude with its fifth season, which is currently in development.

Beyond the television series, the expansive Witcher universe continues to thrive across various media. A concert tour celebrating the acclaimed music of “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” recently embarked on its American leg. Concurrently, CD Projekt Red is actively developing “The Witcher 4,” a highly anticipated installment rumored to feature Ciri as the main protagonist for the first time. Additionally, a remake of the original 2007 “The Witcher” game is in production, being developed by Fool`s Theory under the watchful guidance of CD Projekt Red.
