Lego Set Retirement: A Popular Star Wars Collectible Nears Its End

Few Lego sets achieve the enduring popularity of the Darth Vader Helmet. Launched in March 2021, this 834-piece display model, capturing the essence of the classic Sith Lord from the Original Trilogy, has remarkably outlasted numerous other Star Wars Lego sets introduced since its release. Considered `ancient` by Lego standards, it nevertheless remains a top-selling Star Wars item across major retailers. For instance, Amazon reported over 2,000 Darth Vader Helmets sold just last month, surpassing sales of many newer sets. However, even the Dark Lord`s legacy in the Lego Star Wars universe has an expiration date. Lego has designated the Darth Vader Helmet as `retiring soon,` indicating it will likely be unavailable from major retailers before the year concludes.

For those looking to add this iconic piece to their collection or seeking a popular gift for a Star Wars enthusiast this holiday season, the Lego Darth Vader Helmet is currently discounted to $62 (originally $80). While not its lowest historical price, this represents one of the year`s significant savings. Given its impending retirement, stock is expected to deplete quickly at retailers, with no guarantee of replenishment. For comparison, the Lego Store sells the set at full price, but it is currently on backorder with a two-month shipping delay.

Collectors might also consider combining the Darth Vader Helmet with other Lego Star Wars Helmet deals, such as those for The Mandalorian and Captain Rex, which are also anticipated to retire soon. Additionally, a notable bundle deal at Walmart offers Kylo Ren`s Helmet and Command Shuttle, providing savings of over $40.

Detailed Look at Lego Star Wars Helmet Models

Darth Vader Helmet (834 Pieces)

This 834-piece model measures 8 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches and is designed for more experienced builders, utilizing advanced techniques to capture Vader`s iconic look. Beyond the detailed exterior, the build notably includes Vader`s life-support system. It comes with a brick-built display stand featuring a detachable nameplate with the Lego Star Wars logo. Earlier bundle offers for this helmet, including one with the new UCS AT-ST and another with the Kylo Ren Helmet, are now sold out.

Kylo Ren Helmet (529 Pieces)

The 529-piece Kylo Ren Helmet, representing Lord Vader`s grandson, is available in a special Walmart bundle. This offer pairs the helmet with Kylo Ren`s Command Shuttle (a 386-piece stealth starship model) for $98, a significant markdown from its original $140 combined price. This effectively makes each $70 set just $49. Since its launch in May for Star Wars Day, the Kylo Ren Helmet has seen no standalone discounts. This 529-piece model, measuring 7 x 4.5 x 5 inches when complete, is exclusive to Walmart and the Lego Store.

The Mandalorian Helmet (584 Pieces)

Introduced in early 2022, The Mandalorian Helmet (584 pieces) is also expected to retire soon. This build faithfully recreates Mando`s distinct Beskar plate armor. Mounted on its stand, the helmet measures 7 x 4 x 4.5 inches. It is currently available on sale for $56 (down from $70).

Captain Rex Helmet (854 Pieces)

Remarkably, the Captain Rex Helmet boasts the highest piece count among the currently produced Lego Star Wars Helmets. This 854-piece replica of the beloved 501st Legion Clone Commander`s helmet measures 8 x 5 x 5 inches and meticulously renders the unique armor plating seen in The Clone Wars film and TV series. The Captain Rex Helmet is currently on sale for $56 (originally $70).

Jango Fett Helmet (616 Pieces)

The 616-piece Jango Fett Helmet, released alongside the Kylo Ren Helmet for Star Wars Day, has seen only minor discounts to date. The finished model measures 8.5 x 4.5 x 4 inches and features an adjustable rangefinder antenna. Lego has given considerable attention to Jango Fett this year, including the addition of his starship from Attack of the Clones to the UCS lineup for Star Wars Day, and a smaller playset version of the Firespray-Class Starship launched in August.

Clone Commander Cody Helmet (766 Pieces)

Although Lego discontinued the Clone Commander Cody Helmet in February 2025, Amazon recently restocked this 766-piece set at its original $70 MSRP. Fans of The Clone Wars and Bad Batch should consider acquiring it while it remains available. The completed model with its display stand measures 8 x 5 x 5.5 inches.

Beyond the helmets, Walmart is offering another bundle deal on a soon-to-be-retired Lego Star Wars set: Darth Maul`s Sith Infiltrator, usually priced at $70, can be bundled with the Darth Maul Mech for just $62 (a reduction from $88). The highly sought-after 583-piece Droideka Destroyer Droid is also approaching retirement and is available for $52 (down from $65). Additionally, two Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) Star Wars Lego sets are being discontinued: Luke Skywalker`s X-Wing Starfighter and the colossal Razor Crest Starship from The Mandalorian, with the latter currently seeing a modest discount.

In total, 23 Lego Star Wars sets are slated for retirement. Below is a selection of non-UCS sets that are currently discounted. Several movie scene dioramas are on sale, including the Mos Espa Podrace from The Phantom Menace for $57 (originally $80) and Boarding the Tantive IV from A New Hope for $44 (originally $55). The 654-piece Tantive IV Starship display model is also available for $64 (from $80). These three, among others in the list, were part of Lego Star Wars` commemorative 25th-anniversary series.

  • UCS Razor Crest Starship (6,187 pieces) – $582.58 (originally $600)

Important Note: Prices for Lego Star Wars Mechs often increase significantly post-retirement. Even though the Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech is currently at its full $16 MSRP, waiting too long to acquire it could mean missing out. Its striking design makes it a desirable collectible.
