LEGO Mario Kart: New Sets, Iconic Characters, and More!

The LEGO Mario Kart collection has nearly doubled in size with the recent release of its second wave of playsets on August 1st. Like the initial launch in January, these new building sets feature iconic karts from the video game series and introduce a character previously unfeatured in LEGO form: Wario. The fan-favorite antihero, along with his signature pink kart and paraglider, is now available bundled with King Boo’s charming Teddy Bear-inspired Buggy. This combo pack is one of five new sets available now. The collection also signals its ongoing expansion with the new Interactive LEGO Mario & Standard Kart starter set.

Here`s a detailed overview of the complete LEGO Mario Kart lineup, encompassing both the new releases and the original playsets, some of which are currently offered at attractive prices:

New LEGO Mario Kart sets
A look at the new LEGO Mario Kart sets.

For Bowser fans, his formidable castle joins the lineup as a large, 1,000-plus piece, $100 set, perfectly complementing the earlier Grand Prix playset. If your interest lies primarily in the Bowser character himself rather than the castle, consider acquiring the soon-to-be-discontinued Bowser’s Muscle Car for $26, which is becoming scarce at retailers. Alternatively, a new Bowser-themed LEGO set, Prince Florian & Castle Bowser, is available for $100. Inspired by the Super Mario Bros. Wonder game, this 1,251-piece model recreates the final boss battle and is one of three new mainline LEGO Super Mario sets.

The second wave of LEGO Mario Kart also introduces what appear to be the series` first retailer-exclusive playsets. The Piranha Plant Power-Up Pursuit, featuring Koopa Troopa and Toadette, and the $20 Shy Guy & P-Wing set are currently listed only on Target and the LEGO Store websites. While official confirmation is pending, it would be unusual for other major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy to simultaneously lack these new releases. This pattern has been observed with previous Target-exclusive LEGO Mario sets, as these two were revealed later than the other three.

As of now, the LEGO Mario Kart series comprises 11 playsets, most priced at $50 or less. A complete collection would yield 17 karts, 24 figures, and numerous interactive accessories. This count excludes the impressive Mario Kart: LEGO Mario & Standard Kart, a 1,972-piece display model designed for adults, which launched in May at the LEGO Store and became available at other major retailers last month.

If you`re still looking to complete your collection of the original six Mario Kart sets, several are currently on sale at Amazon and Walmart (as of August 3rd). Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi, Toad’s Garage, and Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo are all available at a 20% discount.

Below, you`ll find detailed descriptions for all 11 playsets and the remarkable display model. The sets are presented from newest to oldest. For those interested in character figures, we`ve focused on what each set offers. It`s also worth noting that figures and elements from the traditional LEGO Super Mario line are compatible with the LEGO Mario Kart collection.

Interactive LEGO Mario & Standard Kart (72043)

$55 | 278 Pieces

Interactive LEGO Mario & Standard Kart

The introduction of a dedicated starter set with Interactive Mario suggests a promising future for the LEGO Mario Kart series. Previously, new players needed one of the “Adventures with LEGO Mario” starter sets to enjoy the visual and audio effects of each kit. Now, this set provides the Mario figure, his Standard Kart, and various accessories with interactive Action Tags. The buildable, battery-operated figure features expressive LCD eyes and a chest screen displaying elements, colors, and animations based on the Action Tags Mario interacts with. When an Interactive figure is in the driver`s seat, you`ll experience reactions for starting a race, drifting, gliding, honking, and more. Accessories also have Action Tags triggering unique sound effects and expressions. The set includes a Bob-omb with an Action Tag, a Thwomp, track barriers, an interactive Item Box, traffic cones, a Banana, a starting platform, and a winner’s circle with checkered flags. Red and Green Shells can be launched from the kart’s removable launcher. While the Standard Kart is similar to the $20 launch version (minus the Super Glider), this new starter set is ideal for newcomers. Currently, only Interactive Mario is available for Mario Kart, though Luigi and Peach figures from traditional starter sets are compatible. Priced at $55, this set offers 60 more pieces than its platforming-focused counterpart.

LEGO Mario Kart: Wario & King Boo (72038)

$50 | 512 Pieces

Wario & King Boo LEGO Set

Five years in the making, Wario finally joins the LEGO Super Mario collection, and this set is expected to be highly popular due to his fan base. LEGO has perfectly captured Wario’s signature maniacal smile. Wario’s distinct pink Badwagon comes with the Wario Wing paraglider, which is detachable and can be used with any kart, including King Boo’s adorable blue Teddy Buggy. King Boo, while also cool, features a cube-shaped figure similar to the one in King Boo’s Haunted Mansion expansion set. This 512-piece set also includes two Green Shells, a Red Shell, and two traffic cones.

LEGO Mario Kart: Piranha Plant Power-Up Pursuit (72044)

$50 | 588 Pieces

Piranha Plant Power-Up Pursuit with Toadette

Potentially exclusive to Target and the LEGO Store, this 588-piece set introduces a unique kart feature: a Piranha Plant that can attach to the front of Toadette’s Cat Cruiser or Koopa Troopa’s Tanooki Kart. The Potted Piranha Plant has its own rubberized tires, distinct from the karts. This cool build transforms one of the video game series’ more interesting items into LEGO form. The set also includes an Item Box with an Action Tag, two Red Shells, and one Green Shell. Each kart has an Action Tag that triggers sound effects when driven by Interactive LEGO figures. This is the most affordable set featuring Toadette, a popular character with only two previous appearances in LEGO Super Mario.

LEGO Mario Kart: Shy Guy & P-Wing (72045)

$20 | 249 Pieces

Shy Guy & P-Wing LEGO Set

This 249-piece set primarily serves as a character pack, featuring Shy Guy and his P-Wing kart with a detachable Plane Glider, along with Red and Green Shells and a Banana. This is a significant addition, as Red Shy Guy has been difficult to acquire previously, appearing in mystery bags or retired sets.

LEGO Mario Kart: Bowser’s Castle (72039)

$100 | 1,068 Pieces

Bowser`s Castle LEGO Set

Bowser’s Castle is the first LEGO Mario Kart playset to exceed 1,000 pieces. This 1,068-piece set includes Bowser and Green Yoshi with their Standard ATV and Mach 8 karts, each equipped with an Action Tag for Interactive LEGO figures. The castle wall spans 14 inches wide and features decorative horns over 10 inches tall. The gated side walls fold inward/outward, allowing for a maximum depth of 8 inches. The castle boasts many interactive elements: a Thwomp on a chain blocking a fiery underpass, and destructible gated walls on each side. One gate is guarded by a spinning Fire Bar, while the other is overlooked by a Lava Bubble. A designated spot in the tower allows the Bowser figure to stand guard. This set integrates well with other LEGO Mario Kart kits to create larger courses, serving as the Wave Two equivalent of the Grand Prix set.

Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart (72037) – Display Model

$170 | 1,972 Pieces

LEGO Mario Kart Display Model

This 1,972-piece model is the only set in the series aimed at adult collectors, featuring a much larger and more detailed version of the Standard Kart and the most elaborate rendition of Mario’s modern 3D design. Mario’s head, arms, and thumbs are posable, though he cannot stand independently outside the kart without support. The completed model measures approximately 12.5 inches long, 7.5 inches wide, and 8.5 inches tall. It includes a clever buildable display stand that can be tilted to simulate uphill/downhill motion or drifting. While the rubberized wheels are functional, this large-scale model is primarily for display and should be handled delicately. Like other Nintendo display models, it comes with a physical instruction booklet and supports an interactive guide via the LEGO Builder app. This set was initially a LEGO Store exclusive before wider release.

LEGO Mario Kart: Standard Kart (72032)

$19 | 174 Pieces

Standard Mario Kart LEGO Set

Mario’s Standard Kart was part of the January launch. Even if you own the Interactive LEGO Mario Kart starter set, this 174-piece build offers unique features like Mario’s detachable Super Glider and Pit Crew Toad. It also includes Red and Green Shells, a Banana, and a workstation for Toad that doubles as a target. The workstation and kart both have Action Tags for Interactive LEGO figures. If you don’t have a starter set, the included Pit Crew Toad can drive the kart.

LEGO Mario Kart: Yoshi Bike (72031)

$13 | 133 Pieces

Yoshi Bike LEGO Set

The Yoshi Bike remains the most affordable set in the series. This 133-piece set features a green bike modeled after Yoshi (with Yoshi Egg rims), a Light Blue Yoshi figure, traffic cones, an Item Box, a Banana, and Red and Green Shells. Interactive Mario, Luigi, and Peach figures react to the race start, drifting, horn honking, and hover mode. Colliding with the Item Box triggers in-game sound and visual effects. This set marks the first appearance of Light Blue Yoshi in a LEGO Mario set, and other Yoshi figures are compatible.

LEGO Mario Kart: Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi (72034)

$23.80 | 321 Pieces

Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi LEGO Set

This charming 321-piece set transports builders back to a younger era for the Super Mario brothers, featuring buildable Baby Mario and Baby Luigi figures with their Biddybuggy and Tri-Speeder karts, respectively. The Biddybuggy is a red buggy inspired by the Para-Biddybud enemy, while Baby Luigi’s Tri-Speeder is one of the few three-wheeled karts in the series. Accessories include Red and Green Shells and six balloons for targets or playful bops. Adult Interactive figures can drive the karts and activate sounds, though Baby Mario and Luigi themselves are not interactive. Luigi`s kart is the only three-wheeled vehicle in the lineup.

LEGO Mario Kart: Toad’s Garage (72035)

$32 | 390 Pieces

Toad`s Garage LEGO Set

Toad’s Garage is a 390-piece set that includes two Blue Toad figures, the B Dasher kart, and a unique Customization Machine with an operable car elevator. Also featured are a tire rack with spare tires, a raised platform for a Toad figure, and two-way radio and wrench accessories, plus a Red Shell. This set stands out for its customization features, allowing builders to swap between blue and black wheels using the Customization Machine. The car elevator crank adds interactive play. The Customization Machine works with other karts, making this a valuable addition for play-focused collectors. Interactive figures can activate engine and horn sounds when using the Customization Machine.

LEGO Mario Kart: Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo (72033)

$29.49 | 387 Pieces

Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo LEGO Set

Donkey Kong’s DK Jumbo kart is the largest vehicle in the playset lineup (excluding the adult display model). This 387-piece set includes a buildable Donkey Kong figure and his barrel-inspired kart, along with Red and Green Shells and a target featuring a Banana item. The goal is to launch shells at the target to knock over the smiling fruit. Beyond standard Mario Kart audio/visual effects, the DK Jumbo kart also incorporates elements from the Donkey Kong Country series when Interactive Mario, Luigi, or Peach are at the wheel. Donkey Kong and his crew previously appeared in four retired LEGO Super Mario sets, but Amazon recently restocked some of these.

LEGO Mario Kart: Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set (72036)

$80 | 823 Pieces

Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set LEGO

The 823-piece Grand Prix set provides essential Mario Kart elements, including a starting gate, track barriers, a winners` podium, and Lakitu on a cloud holding a traffic light. While named Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set, Peach is the star among the three included racers. Baby Peach drives an adorable Wild Wiggler kart. She`s joined by Red Toad on a Standard Bike and the Koopaling Lemmy in his Landship kart. All three karts and several accessories have Action Tags. Other accessories include traffic cones, Item Boxes, a snack wagon, directional signposts, and various Shells and a Banana.
