Larian Studios’ Future: Beyond Baldur’s Gate 3 Success

It has officially been two years since Baldur`s Gate 3 launched, revolutionizing the gaming industry. On this significant anniversary, Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, reflected on the studio`s journey and hinted at its ambitious upcoming ventures.

In response to a social media post celebrating the game, Vincke shared, “Crazy to think it’s only been two years. It’s truly been life-changing. Probably worth writing about one day. But I can spoil the biggest takeaway. BG3 was what allowed us to do our next crazy thing.”

While the developer did not reveal specifics about their next major game, acknowledging it is likely years away, Vincke assured players they will have “plenty of fun.” He elaborated, “How that will pan out is anyone’s guess but I can assure you we’re working hard to ensure you’ll have plenty of fun. Like really – loads of it. In a surprising way. And I can’t wait to show you. But you’ll need to be patient / we’ll need a bit of time to make it all work. It’ll be worth it though.”

Larian is currently keeping details of its next project, codenamed “Excalibur,” under wraps. However, in January, the studio confirmed it was dedicating its “full attention” to this new title. Crucially, it has also been confirmed that this will not be Baldur`s Gate 4.

Baldur`s Gate 3 spent almost three years in early access before its official PC launch on August 3, 2023. Subsequently, it was released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The game garnered widespread critical acclaim, culminating in it winning the coveted Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2023, among numerous other accolades, including GameSpot`s Game of the Year.

The most recent update for Baldur`s Gate 3, Patch 8, introduced significant additions such as 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and cross-platform play for multiplayer. Despite the game`s immense popularity, Larian has definitively stated its lack of interest in developing any DLC.

Vincke explained this decision in an earlier interview with GameSpot, stating, “You want a happy player and happy business, but you also need to have a happy developer. What we`re doing now makes developers way more happy. We had a huge hit, and people said `DLC this` and `DLC that,` and we said we`d make DLC, but then when we had a moment to think, we asked ourselves, `what are we doing?`”
