During MagicCon Atlanta, the “Universes Beyond” initiative by Magic: The Gathering, renowned for its diverse and often surprising crossovers, became the focal point of fresh speculation. A dedicated booth promoting an upcoming Secret Lair drop featuring Furby unintentionally ignited widespread rumors about another potential collaboration, after an individual in a Furby costume was observed dancing with someone dressed as Kirby.
On a Saturday throughout the convention, the Furby mascot took its place on a miniature dance floor situated in front of its section. Unexpectedly, a person in a prominent Kirby costume joined the festivities, continuing for nearly thirty minutes. Wizards of the Coast later clarified that this interaction was purely coincidental, explaining that a fan happened to possess a Kirby suit and simply decided to partake in the impromptu dance.
Despite the official confirmation dispelling collaboration hints, speculation rapidly spread across social media. Posts on various platforms shared images and videos of the two dancing mascots. Before long, comments on these posts began to question if Kirby would indeed be joining the Magic: The Gathering universe, while others correctly surmised that the individuals in the Kirby suit were merely “random con-goers.”
Should Nintendo ever consider a collaboration with Magic: The Gathering, there are numerous precedents set by other video game franchises recently integrated into the game. Some of these collaborations feature original card designs themed around the included characters. The recent Final Fantasy set, for example, became the best-selling MTG set of all time on its debut day. Additionally, Secret Lair drops for Sonic The Hedgehog, Tomb Raider, and Street Fighter have already been released, all showcasing unique card artwork and mechanics.
Coinciding with these developments, Wizards of the Coast announced a new partnership with PlayStation during MagicCon Atlanta’s Secret Lair panel. This collaboration will lead to a PlayStation-themed Secret Lair superdrop, slated for release on October 27. The games featured in these PlayStation drops include critically acclaimed titles such as God of War (covering both Greek and Norse eras), The Last Of Us Parts I and II, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon: Forbidden West.
Considering the increasing number of high-profile crossovers, a potential Nintendo collaboration—whether as a major Universes Beyond set or smaller Secret Lair drops—is not an outlandish concept for the future of Magic: The Gathering.
Further announcements from MagicCon included a comprehensive slate of expansions scheduled for release in 2026, which will feature beloved franchises like The Hobbit, Star Trek, and Marvel Super Heroes. New Secret Lair drops were also unveiled, confirming collaborations with Jaws, The Office, and Furby, among others.
