Kevin Spacey’s On-Set Conduct for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Described as “A Little Weird”

Game director Glen Schofield revealed that disgraced Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey exhibited “a little weird” behavior on the set of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Schofield, however, emphasized that the controversies surrounding Spacey, an Oscar winner, do not “taint the game” itself.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Schofield explained that he specifically wanted Spacey to portray the villain, Jonathan Irons, despite knowing Spacey wasn`t particularly familiar with video games. Despite this, Schofield lauded Spacey`s acting prowess, calling his performance in Advanced Warfare “unbelievable.”

“He just is a great actor,” Schofield stated. “But when we called `cut,` it was evident that video games weren`t his world. We had to get him a private trailer outside, and I`d describe him as a bit more challenging. There’s a monologue where he discusses democracy, which is truly an amazing speech.”

Schofield further recalled that Spacey “got a little weird once in a while on the set,” adding that the actor would make comments “that just weren`t proper.”

“We all had to fake laugh. There was some stuff,” Schofield noted, choosing not to elaborate further.

Advanced Warfare was launched in November 2014, a time when Spacey was at the peak of his Hollywood career, enjoying the success of Netflix’s House of Cards. In 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual misconduct, leading to a cascade of similar allegations. Spacey consistently denied the charges and was later acquitted of sexual assault charges, and found not liable in the civil case brought by Rapp.

Schofield mentioned that Spacey could have potentially returned for a hypothetical Advanced Warfare 2, despite his character`s in-game death. However, Schofield expressed contentment with how events unfolded. “We were going to go there,” Schofield admitted. “I`m glad we didn`t, because the scandal broke about two months before we would have shipped.”

The next installment in the Call of Duty series, Black Ops 7, is confirmed to feature a host of celebrity voice talents.
