After more than two years since its initial reveal, John Carpenter`s first-person shooter, Toxic Commando, has finally resurfaced. The prolonged silence was broken by the debut of an intense new trailer during Gamescom`s Opening Night Live, accompanied by the exciting announcement of an early 2026 release window.
Developed by Focus Entertainment, Toxic Commando plunges players into a brutal post-apocalyptic world. An ancient, terrifying entity known as the Sludge God has invaded Earth, transforming the majority of humanity into grotesque, zombie-like creatures. The game centers on a small team of heavily armed mercenaries, whose vital mission involves traversing the ravaged country to confront this monstrous threat.
The developers aim for Toxic Commando to capture the signature over-the-top humor and visceral horror characteristic of Carpenter`s iconic 1980s films, such as Escape From New York, while also embodying the dynamic spirit of classic buddy action movies. Players will have the opportunity to team up in squads of up to four, strategically choosing their characters, classes, vehicles, and a vast arsenal of weapons. Importantly, the game will also support full cross-play functionality across PC and consoles, ensuring friends can join forces regardless of their preferred platform.
The ultimate objective for these mercenaries is to banish the Sludge God from this dimension—a monumental task, given that the infected vastly outnumber the remaining human population. Yet, as Carpenter himself confidently stated in 2023, “They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game.”
John Carpenter`s Toxic Commando is officially scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in early 2026, promising a unique blend of horror, action, and signature Carpenter style.
