Jim Carrey’s The Mask Gets a Dazzling 4K Blu-ray Limited Edition

Arrow Video, renowned for its exceptional restorations of `90s cinematic gems, is set to unleash a “smokin`” new release: Jim Carrey`s iconic comedy, The Mask. Fans can now anticipate a stunning 4K Blu-ray restoration of the film, with its release slated for November 11. This special edition promises a high-definition upgrade along with an array of fascinating physical and digital extras for collectors and cinephiles alike.

Originally released in 1994, The Mask was a pivotal film in Jim Carrey`s career, cementing his status as a major Hollywood star alongside other blockbusters that year. It`s difficult to imagine anyone else embodying the dual role of the mild-mannered Stanley Ipkiss and his outrageously zany, green-faced alter-ego with the same comedic genius. Carrey`s unparalleled talent for delivering laughs and his incredibly expressive facial movements were integral to the film`s widespread success. Directed by Chuck Russell, the movie was a considerable risk for New Line Cinema but ultimately paid off handsomely, grossing an impressive $351 million at the box office. The film`s immense popularity even led to an animated series adaptation, though a subsequent sequel is often best left forgotten.

This new edition of The Mask features a meticulous 4K restoration sourced from the original camera negative, meticulously undertaken by Arrow Video and personally approved by director Chuck Russell. The 4K disc supports High Dynamic Range, including both Dolby Vision and HDR10, ensuring vibrant colors and deeper contrast that bring Edge City to life like never before. Audiophiles will appreciate the lossless stereo, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound, and a brand-new Dolby Atmos mix, offering an immersive auditory experience.

True to Arrow Video`s reputation, this Limited Edition comes with exquisite physical packaging. It includes a reversible sleeve offering two distinct artwork options: one showcasing Carrey`s iconic toothy grin from the original theatrical poster, and the other a simple yet striking image of The Mask ready to P-A-R-T-Y. Additionally, collectors will find an illustrated booklet featuring new insights from author Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and original production notes, a double-sided fold-out poster presenting two artwork choices, and six postcard-sized reproduction art cards.

Delving into the Original The Mask Comics

The cinematic version of The Mask was adapted from a comic book miniseries published by Dark Horse Comics. While the film embraced a lighthearted, live-action Looney Tunes aesthetic, particularly when Jim Carrey donned the ancient relic, the original comics were considerably darker and featured much more graphic, over-the-top violence. Jim Carrey`s portrayal of Stanley Ipkiss as a lovable, if somewhat hapless, character with a good heart sharply contrasts with the comic book version. In the comics, Stanley Ipkiss is far less sympathetic, and upon acquiring the mask, he swiftly uses its immense power to brutally exact revenge on those who have wronged him.

Some elements from the comics did make it into the film, albeit significantly toned down. For instance, the mechanics who extort Ipkiss in the movie are merely humiliated by his masked alter-ego; in the comic series, they meet a gruesome end. Other characters in the comics are gunned down in cold blood, and the original narrative certainly doesn`t conclude with a happy ending for Ipkiss. The original mini-series by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke stands as a powerful, dark tale about revenge and the corrupting influence of absolute power.
