The history of DC video games has been largely inconsistent, plagued by numerous setbacks and unfulfilled projects despite notable successes like the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, is determined to rectify this as a core component of his ambitious decade-long strategic vision for the franchise.
Following the DCU`s reboot in 2023, Gunn emphasized a strong commitment to cross-platform storytelling. His vision includes actors reprising their iconic roles across various media, explicitly mentioning video games. While public updates on this initiative have been limited, Gunn recently confirmed “slight movement on different things.” This suggests a future where actors, potentially including David Corenswet as Superman, could lend their voices to characters in both cinematic productions and interactive gaming experiences, though specific casting details remain undisclosed.
In a discussion with GamesRadar, Gunn revealed, “We have a few smaller DC games launching, but we are also in the initial planning phases for some bigger projects. There`s one in particular I`m very enthusiastic about, but these things naturally require significant development time.”
Both Gunn and Peter Safran are actively and proactively engaged in shaping the direction of DC`s gaming future. Safran previously outlined their concerted efforts to pivot the division towards consistently delivering essential, fan-favorite titles once again, signaling a renewed focus on quality and player engagement.
Safran further elaborated on their hands-on approach: “James and I directly collaborate with studio heads, from NetherRealm to Rocksteady, to discuss characters and storylines that resonate with both our overarching vision and their creative interests.” This direct involvement underscores a strategic partnership aiming for creative synergy.
Gunn also acknowledged that any major new game release is “at least a couple of years” away. In the interim, reports indicate that Rocksteady is expected to return to its highly praised single-player Batman formula for its next project. This move aligns with WB Games` broader strategy to concentrate its resources and efforts on its most prominent and established franchises, promising a focused approach to future DC game development.
