Developer Heart Machine released Hyper Light Breaker into early access earlier this year, following a significant delay of nearly two years. However, the game`s development is now being scaled back due to recent layoffs at the studio.
A spokesperson for Heart Machine confirmed that the layoffs would lead to the conclusion of the project. They cited broader industry forces beyond the studio`s control, including shifts in funding, corporate consolidation, and the challenging environment that many small studios like theirs are currently navigating.
In a subsequent statement, Heart Machine indicated that they are not completely abandoning Hyper Light Breaker. A more polished version of the game is still planned for release in January 2026, which will serve as at least one final update.
The studio`s representative stated, “We aim to deliver something meaningful, as polished, and as complete as possible given our current circumstances. We are doing our utmost to refine existing elements, finalize key systems, and ensure the game culminates in a satisfying punctuation point.”
Hyper Light Breaker is a prequel to the critically acclaimed 2016 title, Hyper Light Drifter, which received high praise upon its release. Heart Machine is also working on another project, Possessor(s), a metroidvania game slated for a November 11 release on PC and PS5, which has garnered attention from industry observers.
