Helldivers 2: Lack of Player Feedback Hinders Game Improvements for Developers

Despite its immense popularity, Helldivers 2, which recently expanded its player base to include Xbox Series X|S users, faces a unique challenge. Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has indicated that his team finds it difficult to make game adjustments due to insufficient feedback from the majority of players.

Jorjani highlighted this issue, stating, “The vast, vast majority silently play the game—they don`t post here or on Reddit.” He further explained that while internal statistics reveal what works well and what doesn`t, this data doesn`t always align with public discourse. “When we do good, we see this in the stats. And when we don`t, we also see it—sometimes it overlaps with what influencers or people say on social media, but often it doesn`t. So we use different tools to calibrate our compass.”

While developers do consider feedback from Helldivers 2 streamers, Jorjani believes these voices represent “the play style of a minority.” He noted that streamers often “set standards for many, as they have a platform to broadcast and many viewers.” Ultimately, Arrowhead’s approach to implementing changes and fixes involves a careful balance of external feedback with “a lot of data, metrics, and qualitative data.”

Helldivers 2 recently saw a significant milestone, surpassing 500,000 concurrent players, a surge largely attributed to the influx of Xbox gamers. To celebrate this cross-platform expansion, Arrowhead collaborated with Microsoft to introduce Halo`s iconic ODST MA5C Assault Rifle into the game. Although the weapon initially caused some game crashes, this issue has been resolved in the latest Helldivers 2 update, which also brought exciting new alien hive worlds for players to explore.
