Helldivers 2 has emerged as one of Sony`s few successful live-service titles, particularly after its cross-platform release on Xbox Series X|S. However, fans anticipating a quick sequel might need to adjust their expectations. Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studio, has stated that his ambition is to keep Helldivers 2 actively supported indefinitely.
In a recent Discord post (as reported by GamesRadar), Jorjani clearly communicated: “There are no plans for [Helldivers 3]–just [Helldivers 2] for as long as it can go.” He drew a comparison to RuneScape, illustrating the concept of maintaining a single game for many years. It`s worth noting that RuneScape eventually did receive two sequels, which were largely updated versions of the original. Helldivers 2 itself launched nine years after its predecessor, though its current exponential success could certainly justify a more timely follow-up.
Earlier this month, Jorjani appeared to hint that a Destiny-style social hub was a potential feature for Helldivers 3. He later clarified his statement, explaining that he was referring to Arrowhead`s next game, not a Helldivers 2 sequel. The details of this mysterious future project have not yet been officially announced.
Recent Updates and Challenges
A new Helldivers 2 update, “Into the Unjust,” was released in September. This update introduced several issues, leading Arrowhead to temporarily remove the Rupture Strain subfaction. The studio also deployed a patch addressing cave crashes and audio bugs. More recently, Arrowhead acknowledged a comprehensive list of persistent problems, including “performance drops, stability hiccups, freezes, and the annoying audio bugs.” An update is scheduled for October, but resolving many of these issues may require additional time.
