Halo: Campaign Evolved Remake Overhauls Every Asset for Modern Gaming

The upcoming remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, titled “Campaign Evolved,” is set to modernize the classic 2001 sci-fi first-person shooter. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, Halo Studios has extensively reworked the game`s visuals to bring it up to contemporary standards.

According to Game Director Greg Hermann, who spoke in a Polygon-attended roundtable interview, “Every single asset has undergone scrutiny, modification, or enhancement during its transition to the new engine.” This statement highlights the comprehensive effort made to refresh the game`s aesthetics.

While some speculated about the use of AI tools in the development process, Microsoft has not confirmed this, only noting that AI usage was not mandatory. Executive producer Damon Conn emphasized the team`s dedication to preserving the core essence of Halo while meticulously rebuilding and enhancing its components. He stated, “We`ve done everything we can to make sure that we preserve the heart of Halo as we rebuild and retouch everything.”

The development team asserts that they have successfully maintained the original game`s “tone, atmosphere, and emotional impact” within Campaign Evolved, despite the extensive visual overhaul.

The remake also introduces some contentious modifications, such as adding a sprint mechanic and updating vehicles, which has drawn criticism from one of the original game`s designers. Conversely, another veteran developer from the original Halo team expressed a more positive and optimistic view of the remake`s direction.

Scheduled for release in 2026, Campaign Evolved will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and notably, PlayStation 5. This marks a significant moment as the Halo franchise, traditionally exclusive to Xbox, makes its debut on PlayStation. Halo Studios has indicated that more Halo titles may follow on PS5 in the future, stating, “Halo is on PlayStation” going forward.

While competitive multiplayer will not be featured, cooperative campaign play is confirmed. Although pricing details are yet to be revealed, it`s confirmed that Campaign Evolved will launch simultaneously across all platforms, avoiding a staggered release where Xbox and PC versions arrive before PS5.

Microsoft has also confirmed that several other new Halo titles are under development. Speculation points to a potential live-service Halo game also arriving in 2026, coinciding with the franchise`s 25th anniversary.
