At Gamescom 2025, legendary filmmaker John Carpenter garnered significant attention. His name is associated with Toxic Commando, Saber Interactive`s cooperative zombie FPS, and his classic sci-fi horror, The Thing, inspires the upcoming Directive 8020. Most notably, the first trailer for a new Halloween game was unveiled during the event. This game, based on Carpenter`s iconic slasher classic, features him as an executive producer.
Developed by Illfonic, known for licensed horror titles such as Friday the 13th, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Predator, and Ghostbusters, in partnership with Gun Media, Compass International Pictures, and Further Front, the game`s asymmetrical multiplayer mode comes as no surprise. However, this isn`t merely a reskin of Friday the 13th: The Game with Michael Myers. The developers confirmed that the Halloween game will offer both single-player and multiplayer horror experiences.
While Friday the 13th included single-player challenges, they lacked a narrative. Design Director Jordan Mathewson revealed that the Halloween game will feature a robust story mode, developed with Shanghai-based Pollard Studio (known for Karma: The Dark World). Mathewson stated, “It incorporates narrative and cinematic elements to provide a rich story and deep exploration. We`ve also extensively developed and refined it to create a distinct experience separate from multiplayer, offering a fresh perspective on this genre.”
Beyond the announcement trailer, no further gameplay details for Halloween`s story mode have been revealed, even privately. Thus, precise expectations remain unclear, though players will step into the iconic shoes and mask of Michael Myers. Mathewson`s insights, however, suggest a concept akin to a `Hitman` game, but from the perspective of a serial killer.
The game draws its blueprint from the 1978 film, placing the action in the tranquil rural and suburban town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Mathewson confirmed, “All decorations, characters, and clothing are authentically from the 1970s.” He added that exploring this era and its limited technology for single-player development has been a significant and enjoyable aspect, distinguishing it from their earlier projects.

Although Haddonfield is primarily known for its suburban imagery, a setting that intensifies the horror of a killer on the loose, Mathewson assured that the game will feature diverse maps extending beyond the neighborhood. He explained, “There`s much more to Haddonfield, as seen in the movie, that we`ll be exploring, ensuring various map types with different sizes and gameplay styles, offering distinct experiences across these locations.”
The presence of seemingly large, sandbox-style maps is vital for Halloween`s slower, stealth-oriented gameplay. Unlike Friday the 13th, where Jason hunted counselors under a time constraint, Haddonfield in Halloween acts as a living simulation of 1970s suburbia. Numerous NPCs will be engaged in their routines on Halloween night, and any of them could become a target for Michael Myers.
Here, the comparison to Agent 47 becomes evident: Myers must patiently observe NPCs, lurking in the shadows, awaiting the perfect moment to strike. Conversely, other players will not be fleeing targets, but rather attempting to prevent the carnage by rescuing targeted townsfolk, perhaps by persuading them to evacuate their homes.

Mathewson explained, “Stealth is crucial for both sides: Michael wants to remain unseen, employing a methodical approach, while civilians aim to stay hidden until they can confront him.” Similar to how open assassinations in Hitman draw attention, Michael`s rampage becomes harder if he reveals himself. Civilian players can also escalate the situation: “You can attempt to call the police and convince them about a killer. If officers investigate and find evidence, more units will be dispatched, posing a significant challenge for Michael. Though powerful, he will be tested by these authority figures.”
Without actual gameplay, it`s hard to visualize this scenario. Will Michael Myers, the iconic bogeyman, truly be thwarted by small-town police? Given his menacing presence, his stealth tactics likely extend beyond simply hiding in a bush; how then does he maintain his clandestine approach? Furthermore, by adhering strictly to the 1978 film—his most grounded portrayal—will his powers be limited when confronting both other players and the town?
Such specifics, regrettably, await future reveals from Illfonic. However, Mathewson affirmed that the studio, in collaboration with IP holder Compass, has thoroughly researched Michael`s capabilities. He emphasized, “It maintains a grounded feel, designed to immerse you in a familiar yet vulnerable reality.” He concluded, “It`s been enjoyable exploring that aspect, adhering to the source material while also expanding on Michael`s perspective to create a truly compelling, engaging, and powerful experience.”
The Halloween game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
