GTA 6’s Price Tag: Why a $100 Launch Might Not Happen

Despite ongoing speculation that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be priced at $100, one industry analyst suggests this high price point is unlikely. The analyst argues that GTA Online, with its lucrative microtransactions, serves as the primary revenue generator for Rockstar.

Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics explained to Wccftech why a $100 base price for GTA 6 would be ill-advised. He emphasized that GTA Online`s consistent revenue from microtransactions makes it Rockstar`s true financial powerhouse. Elliott stated:

`The real cash cow is GTA Online and its recurring revenues, so limiting GTA VI`s total addressable audience at launch to make a quick buck wouldn`t be smart. Let`s also not forget there`s a cost-of-living crisis happening globally.`

Elliott further noted that Rockstar faces the challenge of transitioning a significant portion of GTA 5`s massive player base to the new title. A lower initial price for GTA 6`s standard edition could be crucial to facilitating this migration. He warned:

`A higher floor for the switching cost would limit the GTA 5-to-GTA 6 player acquisition.`

He added that `Players not budging from GTA 5 is probably one of GTA VI`s biggest threats–one GTA hasn`t really faced before.`

Additionally, Elliott suggested that Rockstar could offer a premium version of GTA 6, priced at $100 or more, which could include extra perks like early access or in-game currency for GTA Online. He reasoned that `Players with the disposable income to pay that will pay it. It`s the best of both worlds, and it`s the norm for AAA games these days,` allowing the publisher to cater to different market segments.

While acknowledging that market data indicates consumer willingness to pay higher prices for highly anticipated games, Elliott believes Rockstar will likely opt for a more moderate price. He suggested that Rockstar might not `charge more than it needs to,` predicting an eventual price point of $80 for the base game.

Elliott`s insights follow a statement from Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who recently told The Telegraph that he anticipates GTA 6`s base edition would indeed retail for $100.

The gaming community awaits further details as Take-Two is scheduled to release its next earnings report and address analyst questions on August 7. It is possible the company will provide additional information regarding its plans for Grand Theft Auto 6 during this time.

Following a previously announced delay, Grand Theft Auto 6 is now slated for release on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
