Sucker Punch Productions` latest samurai fantasy sequel, Ghost of Yotei, has recently launched on PlayStation 5 to widespread critical acclaim. While the positive reception naturally leads to speculation about future installments in the Ghost franchise, the development team has indicated that the choice of their next project is deeply influenced by careful timing and strategic decisions.
In an interview with VGC, Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming shed light on the studio`s approach. He affirmed that neither a continuation of the Ghost series nor a revival of the long-dormant Sly Cooper franchise is beyond consideration. However, given that the team typically undertakes a new major game only “about every five years,” Fleming emphasized that any chosen concept must undeniably be their “best idea” possible.
Fleming further explained that their next undertaking, whether another Ghost game or a return to Sly Cooper, is constrained by their commitment to focused development and iterative design. This approach allows them to concentrate on only one project at a time. He acknowledged the popularity of juggling multiple projects like remasters or fulfilling fan requests, but stressed that their singular focus necessitates choosing the most compelling idea. “It`s not that there aren`t 15 good ideas,” Fleming explained, “but you only get to do one, and you only get to do one about every five years. This makes the choice incredibly significant, akin to deciding your college and major every five years – it`s a monumental decision that requires careful consideration.”
The Sly Cooper series has remained inactive for more than ten years, with its last significant release being the stealth-action title “Thieves in Time” in 2013. Although a comedy heist film and an animated TV series based on the franchise were reportedly in development, their current status suggests they are stalled.
With Ghost of Yotei`s recent launch, the team is understandably preoccupied with this project. Following the precedent set by its acclaimed predecessor, Tsushima, Yotei is expected to receive a DLC expansion and the free multiplayer Legends mode, both slated for release in 2026.
Ghost of Yotei earned an outstanding 9/10 rating in a review, which praised the open-world samurai action game. Reviewer Richard Wakeling noted that while familiarity is inherent to a sequel, “every alteration is in service of Atsu and her profound differences, making for a game that manages to feel distinct even when what you`re doing is so recognizable.” This assessment highlights the game`s appealing depth.
