As revealed in the latest State of Play presentation, Ghost of Yōtei is bringing significant changes to its combat system. The new protagonist, Atsu, is equipped with a much larger variety of tools and weapons compared to Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima.
The gameplay breakdown in State of Play described Atsu not as a samurai or ninja, but as a `lone wolf mercenary`. Her fighting approach clearly reflects this. Unlike Jin, who relied primarily on a limited set of weapons for formal duels or discreet assassinations, Atsu can readily engage in open conflict. Her arsenal includes a katana, spear, kusarigama, ōdachi, and dual swords for melee, alongside ranged options such as a half bow, longbow, teppo, kunai, bombs, and blinding powder.
The revealed gameplay showcased a combat system for Atsu`s weapons resembling a rock-paper-scissors mechanic, where specific weapons are designed to be effective counters against certain enemy types. For instance, the ōdachi proves particularly useful against large adversaries, while dual swords are highly effective against spear-wielders. Ghost of Tsushima featured a similar counter system, but it was based on changing combat stances rather than switching weapons. Jin would adapt his posture and sword grip in a fight, with different stances being better suited for handling particular foes.
It remains unconfirmed whether Yōtei`s new weapon-based counter system completely replaces the stance system seen in Tsushima. However, given their similar roles in influencing gameplay encounters, a full replacement seems probable.
Beyond the new weapons, Atsu is also capable of disarming opponents and forming alliances with other characters, including a mysterious wolf who joins her on her quest for revenge. Details on how these allies impact gameplay are still sparse, as we saw little of this dynamic in action.
Presumably, future showcases will provide a deeper look into Atsu`s capabilities and tools for stealth, as well as demonstrating gameplay involving allies. Regardless, the wait to experience the full game won`t be extensive. Ghost of Yōtei is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 on October 2nd.
