Ghost of Yotei Developers Detail Strategy to Combat Open-World Monotony

Sucker Punch`s highly anticipated game, Ghost of Yotei, is poised to continue the legacy of the acclaimed *Ghost of Tsushima* later this year. Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the directors behind both titles, have revealed their approach to ensuring players remain engaged in its vast open world, rather than feeling overwhelmed by an endless list of tasks.

During a conversation with VGC, Fox and Connell clarified that *Ghost of Yotei* will intentionally provide minimal direct guidance on player progression. Instead, it aims to empower individuals to carve out their own unique journey through the game`s expansive environment.

“What Jason and I cherish most is that moment when you`re on your horse, surveying a grand, beautiful landscape,” Fox explained. “Perhaps the wind subtly suggests a path to advance the main narrative, yet your gaze catches something intriguing in the periphery. You decide, `You know what? I`m going to investigate that instead.` That very moment, where the game isn`t dictating your next move or objective, but it`s purely your choice – that is the essence of what makes open-world games so captivating.”

Connell elaborated, stating, “As developers, our challenge is to create an accessible game, deeply inspired by samurai cinema, that provides the elevated degree of creative freedom we aim for. We want players to fully enjoy it, while simultaneously ensuring we never abandon the underlying structure of the story.”

Sucker Punch recently confirmed that *Ghost of Yotei* will pay homage to classic samurai films, notably featuring the return of the fan-favorite Kurosawa mode, a visual style inspired by the cinematic masterpieces of the late Akira Kurosawa. Fox and Connell also engaged in a broader discussion, sharing insights into how they are balancing new gameplay elements in *Ghost of Yotei* with familiar, beloved aspects from its predecessor, *Ghost of Tsushima*.

Ghost of Yotei is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on October 2, and will be accompanied by the release of exclusive limited-edition *Ghost of Yotei* PS5 bundles.
