With its launch approaching on April 16th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Big Bad Wolf has officially presented the first gameplay video for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. The footage provides a detailed look at the title’s first-person investigative mechanics.
Heavily drawing inspiration from the unsettling universe of H.P. Lovecraft, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss follows Noah, an agent from Ancile. He is dispatched into the profound depths of the ocean to investigate the perplexing disappearance of an entire crew from a submarine research station.
Noah’s quest, supported by his artificial intelligence assistant named KEY, inevitably leads them to the mythical sunken city of R’lyeh. This legendary location, rumored to be the eternal prison of the formidable god Cthulhu, emanates an aura of pervasive madness and negative energy, capable of driving anyone who succumbs to its influence into utter insanity.
The central pillar of the game’s interactive experience is the thorough analysis of clues. Players will be tasked with examining and manipulating various objects to discern their composition, a critical step that unlocks new frequencies for the sonar device and aids in identifying similar elements scattered throughout the environment.
However, judicious management of the energy supply required for these analyses is paramount. Excessive use of this vital tool will accelerate the onset of mental corruption, incrementally pushing Noah’s consciousness further towards the edge of the abyss.
Horror and Technology Intertwined
As previously hinted in an earlier trailer for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, the protagonist is equipped with advanced technologies to assist his deep-sea investigations. These tools include a sophisticated sonar system, a comprehensive database for gathering and organizing critical data, and, most importantly, the artificial intelligence companion, KEY.
All these technological assets can be enhanced and upgraded over the course of the campaign. However, these improvements are not always permanent, as their effectiveness and the overall progression of events will be significantly shaped by the choices players make throughout their journey.
