Ever wondered about the daily routine of Valve`s billionaire co-founder, Gabe Newell? From the comfort of one of his yachts, Newell shared with Zalkar Saliev how he balances a consistent work schedule with the unique lifestyle of living on a boat.
Newell described his typical day: “I wake up, I work, then I go scuba diving. After that, I work again, followed by either a second dive or a gym session. Living on a boat means I spend time with everyone aboard. Then, it`s back to work.” He emphasized his dedication, stating, “I work seven days a week, often from my bedroom. I genuinely enjoy working; it doesn`t feel like a chore. The tasks I handle daily are truly fantastic.” This interview`s authenticity was verified by PC Gamer and Valve.
Newell reflected on the conventional concept of retirement – discontinuing an unpleasant job to pursue enjoyable activities. By this definition, he feels he`s been “retired” for quite some time, as his work itself is a source of pleasure.
Beyond his role at Valve, Newell has ventured into new frontiers. He founded Starfish Neuroscience, a neural interface company competing with Elon Musk`s Neuralink. He`s also involved with a firm developing an “aerosol pathogen detection device” designed to identify airborne pathogens.
“I`m constantly working,” he admitted, “but it`s not a struggle where I`m toiling late into the night. It`s more like I`m having so much fun I find it hard to stop and go to sleep.”
Newell`s journey began with dropping out of Harvard in the early 1980s to join Microsoft. He later departed as a millionaire with Mike Harrington to co-found Valve. Today, he`s a billionaire, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $9.5 billion. Despite his vast wealth, Newell remains grounded and connected to his community, notably hand-delivering Steam Decks to fans in 2022.
