The iconic “Pink Panther” franchise, instantly recognizable by its memorable theme music, is receiving a major high-definition upgrade. Four cornerstone films featuring the legendary Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau are being released on 4K Blu-ray, launching on December 30th.
Each new release features a brand-new remaster created from 4K scans of the original camera negatives. Additionally, every package includes a standard Blu-ray copy of the movie and a disc containing special features.
The Pink Panther (1963)
The series commenced with the original 1963 film, which introduced the world to the hapless French police Inspector Jacques Clouseau, portrayed brilliantly by Peter Sellers. In this debut, Clouseau is pitted against the elegant European thief Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), attempting to safeguard the priceless Pink Panther diamond while frequently tripping over his own incompetence. This release marks the first time the foundational film has been made available in 4K resolution.
A Shot in the Dark (1964)
The immediate sequel, A Shot in the Dark, premiered in 1964 and saw Sellers return to the role of Clouseau. Critically, this film introduced Commissioner Dreyfus, Clouseau`s long-suffering boss who would frequently become the unwilling victim of the inspector`s nearly lethal clumsiness. This standalone follow-up is also set to debut on 4K Blu-ray on the same date.
The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)
Following the 1975 film Return of the Pink Panther (which is slated for a 4K Blu-ray release later in 2026), this 1976 entry joins the initial wave of high-definition releases. The Pink Panther Strikes Again follows the now-deranged Commissioner Dreyfus, who, driven mad by Clouseau`s antics in previous installments, orchestrates elaborate schemes aimed at murdering the inspector.
Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978)
The final film included in this initial batch of 4K releases is 1978’s Revenge of the Pink Panther. This movie brought Peter Sellers’ run as Inspector Clouseau to a close, depicting the detective taking on French drug kingpin Philippe Douvier.
Special Features and Franchise Legacy
Beyond the core four films, fans should note that the third movie in the series, Return of the Pink Panther, is scheduled for its own 4K Blu-ray release in 2026. All remastered discs include bonus materials such as behind-the-scenes documentaries and audio commentary tracks. While these special features are inherited from the standard definition DVD releases of the 2000s, they still offer a comprehensive look into the production and cultural impact of the Pink Panther films.
Although Peter Sellers passed away in 1980, the franchise continued through various spin-offs and attempted reboots. These included 1982`s Trail of the Pink Panther, a notorious film composed entirely of deleted scenes and outtakes from prior movies, which was heavily criticized by fans. Later attempts to revive the series, such as 1983’s Curse of the Pink Panther starring Ted Wass, and 1993’s Son of the Pink Panther with Roberto Benigni, failed to capture the original magic. The series saw a modern reboot in 2006 starring Steve Martin as Clouseau, followed by one sequel in 2009.
