As previously rumored, developers Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios are bringing the highly anticipated Forza Horizon 6 to Japan. While the initial announcement trailer offered only a glimpse of Mount Fuji, Xbox Game Studios has invested significantly to help the development teams deeply understand Japanese culture. This commitment included hiring a dedicated cultural consultant to guide the entire development process.
Cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita, speaking on Xbox Wire, elaborated on why the Forza Horizon 6 team recognized the crucial need for extensive knowledge about Japan when digitally recreating the country for the game.
“Japan is widely loved, but it can also be widely misread when you only see it from afar,” Yamashita explained. “The team wanted to present more than a postcard or a backdrop; they wanted a lived-in world. Having a cultural consultant early helps you make a thousand small, respectful decisions: how neighborhoods sound, even what a sign color communicates about a shop. Those small choices add up to credibility and help avoid stereotypes, while also making it a truly immersive experience for players.”
Yamashita emphasized that this dedication to authenticity was treated “as a practice, not a checkbox,” extending even to the game`s seasonal transitions and day-and-night cycles. While Forza Horizon 6`s Japan won`t be a one-to-one replica of the entire country, it aims to feel genuinely familiar to both local residents and international visitors. This nuanced approach also encompasses how Japan`s distinctive car culture is integrated into the game.
“In Japanese car culture, the depth and diversity is astonishing,” Yamashita noted. “Kei cars and vans with cult followings, precision motorsport, drifting’s roots, and their passion for customization really stands out. It`s welcoming to different levels of enthusiasm and knowledge, which is exactly the kind of layered world I want players to feel.”
Forza Horizon 6 is slated for release in 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. A PlayStation 5 version is also in development, planned as a post-launch release.
