Epic Games has officially announced that Fortnite’s original cooperative player-versus-environment (PvE) experience, Save The World, will transition to a free-to-play model starting April 16th.
Initially launched in 2017 as a premium-only title, Fortnite Save The World was the foundational concept for the entire Fortnite universe. It was originally intended to be the franchise’s main attraction, with Fortnite Battle Royale developing as a mere side project. This strategic shift to free-to-play is poised to potentially rejuvenate Save The World’s player base, leveraging the same successful formula that propelled Fortnite Battle Royale to global popularity: an accessible, enjoyable game that players can experience with friends at no cost.
While awaiting the April 16th launch, Epic Games has initiated a special registration event. The first one million players to sign up on the dedicated Fortnite Save The World section of the Fortnite website are eligible for exclusive rewards. These include a unique banner for the first 300,000 registrants and a spray for the first 700,000. The ultimate prize, reserved for the one-millionth registration, is the exclusive Snowstrike hero. This character, unique to Save The World, possesses the ability to slow enemies with freezing throwing stars, which can be further upgraded to explode upon impact.
The free-to-play version of Fortnite Save The World is slated for broad release across a multitude of contemporary gaming platforms. Players can anticipate its availability on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox Cloud Gaming, the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2, PC, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna. The only notable exceptions to this wide release are smartphones and tablets (even through streaming services) and the original Nintendo Switch console.
Epic Games has also ensured that loyal Fortnite Save The World players who have supported the game over the years are not overlooked. Veteran “storm survivors” will receive superchargers to upgrade any Hero, weapon, trap, or survivor to level 50, alongside vouchers that allow them to unlock a hero or weapon of their choice, complemented by a generous bonus of 10,000 gold.
Whether you’ve always been curious about Fortnite’s original gameplay experience or you’re a long-standing veteran, registering for these exclusive freebies before the official free-to-play launch is an opportunity not to be missed.
