After a significant five-year hiatus marked by extensive courtroom proceedings, Fortnite has finally made its highly anticipated reappearance on the Google Play Store. This comeback arrives just in time for the game’s major event, the “Fortnite Showdown.”
The popular battle royale game was initially delisted from Google’s marketplace in 2020 following disputes over storefront policies, primarily concerning payment processing and the substantial commission rates Google imposed. Following a series of legal settlements, Fortnite has now been reinstated on the Android platform. This means Android users can once again easily access Battle Island and jump into the action directly from their mobile devices.
Reports indicate that Epic Games and Google have successfully resolved their prolonged disagreements, with even Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, known for his outspoken criticism, reportedly agreeing to a more neutral stance regarding the Google platform. With its return, players can immediately dive into the latest content, including Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2: Showdown, as if the game had never left.
The new season introduces an exciting choice for players: aligning with either Team Foundation or Team Ice King. As with previous seasonal offerings, this update brings a fresh collection of new weapons, items, and rewards attainable throughout the season. A groundbreaking feature for Fortnite is the introduction of a democratic element within the Battle Pass. The ultimate reward for Battle Pass holders – unlocking either Frost-Ready Foundation or Exalted Frost Ice King – will be determined by the winning team at the season’s conclusion, heavily influenced by player participation and success.
Further enhancing the gameplay experience, a new “Arenas” mode is scheduled to launch on April 9th. This ranked, build-only mode will focus on intense close-quarters combat. Players will have the opportunity to challenge friends to 1v1 boxfights or engage in 16-player round-robin competitions, either solo or as a duo. This dynamic new format will be fully accessible through the Google Play Store version of the game.
The return of Fortnite follows Google’s earlier announcement this month regarding a reduction in its in-app payment commissions. These rates, which were previously 30%, have now been lowered to a range of 10% to 20%. This strategic move by Google directly preceded Tim Sweeney’s confirmation that Fortnite would be relisted on the mobile storefront. Consequently, Android players can now seamlessly re-engage with the game, picking up right where they left off.
