Final Fantasy XIV: PS4 Support Reaches Its Limits

Final Fantasy XIV has been an active title for over a decade, celebrating its 12th anniversary since the launch of A Realm Reborn, and has been accessible across various platforms during this period. Initially released on PC and PS3 (with PS3 support ceasing in 2017 after Stormblood), it is currently available on PS4 and PS5. However, a recent discussion with game director Naoki `Yoshi-P` Yoshida suggests that PlayStation 4 players might need to consider migrating to a different system.

In an interview with TweakTown, where he discussed the game`s future on PS4, Yoshi-P reiterated his commitment to maintaining support for the game, even on older hardware. His primary concern stems from the PS4`s operating system and the hardware restrictions imposed by Sony. Yoshi-P clarified: “These regulations pertain to data limits, and as we continuously integrate updates for Final Fantasy XIV, we are now nearing that maximum capacity.”

Given these limitations, Square Enix has previously requested Sony Interactive Entertainment to specifically raise the data cap for Final Fantasy XIV, and they have graciously complied so far. Nevertheless, Sony has now indicated that they too are reaching their operational boundaries. As Yoshi-P stated, his goal remains to extend platform support for as long as feasible.

Yoshi-P further pointed out that all older hardware will eventually reach its technical limits, and consequently, service for such platforms may eventually conclude. He pledged, however, to “ensure clear justification for that decision when I communicate it to the players.”

Final Fantasy XIV`s latest expansion, Dawntrail, launched last year, introducing a new overarching narrative arc, the first significant one since A Realm Reborn. While there is no official announcement regarding the subsequent expansion, players can refer to GameSpot`s Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail review to understand the current direction of the game.
