Final Fantasy Tactics Remake: New Content or a Sequel?

The upcoming remake of Final Fantasy Tactics, titled “The Ivalice Chronicles,” has the potential to include new content and even pave the way for a future sequel. However, this largely hinges on the commercial success of the remake, making it a conditional possibility rather than a certainty.

Game director Kazutoyo Maehiro, in an interview with Wired, mentioned the prospect of integrating features from the 2007 PlayStation Portable release, “Final Fantasy Chronicles: War of the Lions,” into the remake. Maehiro emphasized that the primary objective was to faithfully reconstruct the original game. While acknowledging player requests for elements like the Onion Knight and Black Knight classes, he clarified that no definitive commitments could be made regarding their inclusion in “The Ivalice Chronicles.”

A new difficulty setting, “Squire,” will be featured in the remake, specifically designed to assist players new to the tactical RPG genre and the series. Furthermore, the classic version of the game, bundled with the remake, will incorporate the script from “War of the Lions.” The development of a true sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics will ultimately be determined by how well the remake is received and its sales performance.

Maehiro, who was the events planner for the original 1997 Final Fantasy Tactics, stated, “If [The Ivalice Chronicles] were to become a success, I do feel that that would then lead to discussions around potentially bringing out sequels, for example, or newer tactical RPGs.” This year, the art director of the original game also expressed a strong desire for Final Fantasy Tactics to run at a smooth 60 frames per second on PlayStation.

The Final Fantasy Tactics remake was unveiled during PlayStation`s State of Play event in June. This tactical RPG is slated for release on September 30 across multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2. Players who purchase “The Ivalice Chronicles” will receive a free upgrade for the Switch 2, though a physical release for the new console is not planned.
