The Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition is back in stock at Amazon for a special Prime Day price on Nintendo Switch. This collection of six classic RPGs is currently discounted to $45, down from its usual price of $75. Please note that this offer for the Switch version is set to expire tonight as Prime Day ends at 12 AM PT.
The PlayStation 4 version (which is also fully compatible with PS5) is still available as well. Amazon has even slightly reduced its price further, allowing PlayStation users to purchase a copy for $42.74.
First released physically in October last year for both Switch and PlayStation platforms, the Anniversary Edition includes a sticker sheet featuring sprites of iconic Final Fantasy characters. It`s important to note that this is a genuine physical release, meaning all six Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are included directly on the game cartridge for Switch or the disc for PS4 (fully compatible with PS5).
Square Enix initially produced a physical release in 2023, but its limited print run led to it selling out extremely quickly. The re-release last autumn, marketed as the Anniversary Edition, marked the first time the collection became broadly available through major retailers.
What`s Included in the Collection
The Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition features the Pixel Remasters of the first six main games in the series:
- Final Fantasy I (NES, 1987)
- Final Fantasy II (NES, 1988)
- Final Fantasy III (Famicom, 1990)
- Final Fantasy IV (SNES, 1991)
- Final Fantasy V (SNES, 1992)
- Final Fantasy VI (SNES, 1994)
Features and Enhancements
All six games have undergone significant graphical and audio enhancements for the Pixel Remaster series. Square Enix meticulously redesigned the character and environment sprites, using the original pixel art as a faithful foundation. Series composer Nobuo Uematsu personally supervised the creation of newly arranged soundtracks for the games, though players also have the option to enjoy the original classic music.
The collection introduces numerous modern conveniences and quality-of-life features. These include quick saving, customizable text fonts, adjustable experience multipliers, auto-battle functionality, and the ability to toggle random encounters on or off. Players can also browse an in-game bestiary and illustration gallery, and listen to classic tunes using a dedicated music player.
Series History
Square Enix originally launched the Pixel Remasters digitally for PC and mobile devices between summer 2021 and February 2022. The collection was later ported to PlayStation and Switch in 2023, followed by a release on Xbox Series X|S last September.
Historically, the original Final Fantasy III was exclusive to Japan for many years until the release of its 3D remake for the Nintendo DS. Many long-time fans in North America might recall Final Fantasy VI, often considered one of the series` highlights, being released there initially under the title Final Fantasy III.
While the games can be played in any order, experiencing them sequentially offers a fascinating perspective on how the Final Fantasy series evolved dramatically from its 8-bit roots on the Nintendo Entertainment System to the more sophisticated 16-bit era on the Super Nintendo.
