Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth received significant critical acclaim upon its 2024 release, Square Enix disclosed in investor briefings that its sales fell short of projections. Director Naoki Hamaguchi, however, reassures fans that these disappointing sales figures will not impact the quality of Part 3, promising a “proper, high-quality” conclusion to the beloved series.
In an interview with Automaton (as reported by IGN), Hamaguchi noted that despite initial underperformance, Rebirth`s sales have gained momentum, particularly with its strong showing on PC. This positive trend ensures the development team can dedicate the necessary resources to deliver a deserving third installment.
Hamaguchi reiterated, “The second entry, FFVII Rebirth, is performing very well on both PlayStation 5 and PC. I understand some fans have voiced concerns, but please be assured that we will deliver a proper, high-quality third installment.”
While Hamaguchi refrained from revealing specific details or the official title for what is currently known as “Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3,” he confirmed to Automaton that development is advancing smoothly.
He further elaborated, “Development is progressing exceptionally well, and the game is taking excellent shape. Much of the content is already playable, and the game`s overall direction and structure are firmly established. Currently, the team is focused on refining all aspects.”
According to an IGN report, Hamaguchi previously informed German publication JPGames on September 25 that the third and concluding chapter of the Remake trilogy is envisioned as a “suitable finale.”
Detailing the development status, Hamaguchi stated: “Regarding Part 3`s development, we are actively working on it. We have playable builds that allow us to experience the game`s core themes through gameplay. We have a clear vision, and development is moving in the correct direction. We`ll continue to enhance it, and hopefully, we can reveal more details soon. This will undoubtedly be the climax and grand finale of the series. We aim to create a truly fitting conclusion, a magnificent send-off for the game. Our goal is to please and delight fans of this beloved series, rewarding everyone who has stayed with us until the end. Expect more information in the near future; the project is in capable hands!”
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released on February 29, 2024, garnering overwhelmingly positive reviews from both fans and critics. It is currently available on PC through the Epic Games Store and Steam, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also anticipated.
